JOB DESCRIPTION:
Our team of Large Account Primary Casualty Underwriters are high-level individual contributors responsible for overall management, business development, growth, and profitability of a book of Large Account Casualty business spanning various industry segments and revenue bands (Manufacturing, Distributors, Education, Real Estate, Technology, Wholesale, Retail, Service classes). You will focus on new business production of risk management primary casualty accounts, utilizing our Standard Lines operating model, emphasizing underwriting performance, exposure-based pricing, and building strong producer and customer relationships.
This position can be located in any of the following offices: San Francisco, Los Angeles, Irvine, San Diego, Denver, Scottsdale, or Seattle.

Position Summary As the Underwriting Consulting Director, you will need loss-sensitive experience within the large account casualty space. You will use technical, sales, and analytical skills to provide insurance solutions that help CNA’s customers manage risk. You will have a thorough understanding of CNA’s strategies and appetites, using internal and external data to make appropriate individual and portfolio risk decisions. You will also be responsible for the profitable growth of your assigned book of business, adhering to underwriting policies, rating rules, and regulations. Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following. Other duties may be assigned. 1.
Underwriting Expertise Review applications and financial requirements to determine risk acceptability per CNA’s guidelines. Understand pricing components, rating methodology, and use of predictive modeling tools; price risk based on financial and competitive analysis. Utilize all appropriate underwriting tools and knowledge of strategies to ensure guidelines are followed. Analyze coverage and limits of underlying policies to structure CNA Umbrella or Excess coverage properly. Complete underwriting write-ups detailing the underwriting process, including analysis of operations, exposures, coverage, and losses. Demonstrate technical underwriting skills through thorough account reviews and documentation. Adhere to guidelines and underwriting discipline to minimize exposure and price appropriately. Stay current on state/territory issues, regulations, and trends. 2.
Portfolio Management Manage your portfolio to achieve premium, profitability, rate, retention, product mix, and growth goals. Prioritize time and resources to manage and optimize producer performance. Identify cross-sell opportunities and foster growth within other lines of business and customer segments. Communicate CNA’s products and appetite clearly at the point of sale. 3.
Sales & Distribution Management Build and maintain rigorous sales practices using CNA systems like SalesForce.com. Develop producer relationships to build pipeline and drive performance. Implement distributor-specific plans, monitor performance, and adjust to ensure future growth. Manage customer relationships to build trust, facilitate negotiations, and secure commitments. Identify cross-sell opportunities and collaborate with other underwriters to provide comprehensive solutions. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Knowledge of underwriting processes, coverages, and tools for evaluating risks. Effective communication with all levels of internal and external partners. Strong problem-solving skills, adaptability, influence, and project management skills. Reporting Relationship Manager or above Skills, Knowledge, and Abilities Advanced underwriting expertise and knowledge of insurance principles and practices. Strong communication, negotiation, and presentation skills. Analytical and problem-solving skills with the ability to manage multiple projects. Ability to handle ambiguous situations and develop creative solutions. Proficiency in Microsoft Office and related software. Leadership skills. Education and Experience Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience; professional designations preferred. Minimum of eight years’ underwriting experience. Depending on experience and qualifications, candidates may be hired into one of three roles: Underwriting Specialist, Underwriting Consultant, or Underwriting Consulting Director.
