About the Role The Vice President/Publisher is responsible for overseeing all aspects of the production, peer-review, and policy management; budgetary, expense, and operational management; and editorial oversight and development of the Associations professional and consumer publications, podcasts and related content. The publications include two monthly, peer-reviewed research journals (Diabetes and Diabetes Care); a bimonthly metabolic disease journal focused on clinical applications, educational strategies, and implementation science (Diabetes, Obesity, and Cardiometabolic CARE); and an open-access journal published in partnership with BMJ; a robust library of scientific and medical books and monographs, including the medical management and clinical compendia series; and various supplemental publications, forms of multimedia (such as podcasts).
The Vice President, Publications represents the Association as the principal liaison between publication editors and editorial committees, print and online vendors, and the Associations Panel on Ethical Scientific Programs. This position is responsible for guiding policy and business decisions related to peer-review and production processes, online and print advertising, professional membership, and negotiating and supervising the execution and administration of agreements related to peer-review and editorial assistance, online and print production, and the licensing and re-use of content published in professional publications.
The Vice President/Publisher works with staff across the Association on strategies to ensure that journals are providing the diabetes/obesity research and health care communities with the most timely, relevant, and insightful content to foster improved health outcomes. The position reports to the Chief Marketing and Digital Officer, partners with Science and Health Care group, and works with Marketing staff on efforts to promote scientific and medical content and to engage with diabetes/obesity researchers, health care professionals, and professional members. The Vice President/Publisher works closely with Scientific & Health Care division to coordinate the publication of practice guidelines, meetings and conference proceedings, and other materials related to professional activities and programs. In addition, the position works closely with Development staff to identify, propose, and produce bespoke sponsored content that aligns with the professional initiatives and mission-oriented objectives. The Vice President, Professional Publications, oversees a team and several contract staff whose overarching objective is to publish the highest-impact diabetes/obesity-related research and the most timely and relevant information for diabetes educators and health care professionals.
This is a remote position with occasional travel (national and international), and the candidate must be comfortable managing staff in a virtual team environment.
RESPONSIBILITIES
Guiding policy and business decisions related to online and print publishing, online and print advertising, subscription and access models, licensing and reuse of content, marketing and promotions, distribution and sales, and membership benefits and programs for both professionals and consumers. Establishing and managing annual budgets for publications and achieving financial performance and revenue goals. Negotiating and executing agreements related to the development, production, and dissemination of content. Partnering closely with executives across the organization, creating effective relationships with key stakeholders, and driving collaboration between the sales, operations, marketing, production, and program teams. Leading team who contributes to the Associations journal publishing program; books publishing program; podcast portfolio; peer-review operations; and print and online production. Establishing, monitoring, and reporting on key performance metrics of publications, and making strategic adjustments as necessary to reach performance goals. Building strategies around existing and anticipated audience requirements to develop new content, publications, and platforms to advance diabetes- and obesity-related treatment, care, and education. Evaluating internal operations and production capabilities, and adjusting processes, metrics, controls, and procedures as needed. Developing and maintaining strategic partnerships with volunteers and committee members, key opinion leaders in the diabetes and obesity community, and representatives of the industry at large to extend the reach of the professional content Representing the Association in a manner that promotes reputation as the most trusted content provider of diabetes/obesity-related information.
QUALIFICATIONS
The ideal candidate should have a Bachelors degree or equivalent; Masters degree preferred. 15 years+ experience with producing health-related, medical, or research-oriented content. Preference for someone with experience with Journals, and Podcasts 10 years of direct management experience, preferably with membership-based organization. A healthcare background is preferred.
