Med Surg/Telemetry recent 2 years exp required Required Certifications BLS (AHA), NIHSS RN license IL Covid card references Shift Notes night EOW Unit Overview: Med Surg/Tele - Inpatient Surgical (3rd Floor) Facility Accepts: Local clinicians Unit Type: Med Surg / Telemetry Location: 3rd Floor (across two buildings) Number of Beds: 48 Staffing & Ratios
* Nurse:Patient Ratio:
* Nights: 1:5-6 * LPNs available to assist * Virtual Nurses assist with admissions & discharges * Primary Care Nursing Model frequently used - must be comfortable with this
* Charge Nurse:
* Day Shift: Usually a Blessing staff nurse * Night Shift: May be house supervisor with smaller assignment
Support Staff
* CNA/Nurse Aides: Available, but may be pulled for sitter coverage. Nights have greater CNA needs. * Telemetry Techs: Yes. RNs are still responsible for interpreting strips.
* Telemetry Brand: Draeger
* Respiratory Therapy: Available
* Equipment: CPAP (home), Airvo (possible), occasional BiPAP (patients may stay on unit)
Patient Population & Common Diagnoses
* Surgical/Neuro Focused:
* Laminectomy, cervical fusion, LESI, total joint replacements (hips/knees), hernia repair, ostomies * Fem-pop bypass, dialysis catheter insertions, BKA/AKA
* Medical/Complex Care:
* Sepsis, chronic pain management (narcotics), diabetes (dialysis on floor), TPN/Lipids, IV antibiotics * PCA use, epidurals
* Urgent OR Cases: Admitted to unit
Clinical Requirements
* Required Certifications:
* BLS * NIH Stroke Scale (NIHSS)
* Required Skills/Experience:
* Minimum 1 year surgical nursing experience * Experience with total joints , PCA pumps , narcan , TPN/lipids , narcotic usage , sepsis management
* Drip Titration:
* Heparin (per protocol)
Scheduling
* Shifts: 3x12s, start at 0700 * Self-Scheduling: Allowed * Block Scheduling: Not guaranteed - discuss with leadership * Schedules Posted: 6 weeks in advance * Weekend Requirement: Every other weekend (Saturday & Sunday) * Holiday Requirement: Rotates with core staff * Call/Standby: None
Floating Policy
* Floats only to like units * If floated to higher acuity , will function in a support role only - no patient assignment
Orientation
* Unit Orientation: 1 full 12-hour shift on assigned unit * First Day: 12-14 hours (includes competencies, computer modules, general hospital orientation)
Dress Code
* Scrub Color: Black * Scrubs Provided: Not specified - assume not provided unless stated otherwise
Additional Notes
* Fast-paced unit with heavy patient loads * Can receive 8-12 surgical admits per day alongside discharges * High acuity, requires experienced and adaptable nurses
