Research Associate, Genomics Platform (Biohub SF)
The Chan Zuckerberg Biohub, Inc., San Francisco
The Chan Zuckerberg Biohub San Francisco (CZ Biohub SF ) ( ) is an independent nonprofit research institute that brings together three powerhouse universities - Stanford, UC Berkeley, and UC San Francisco - into a single collaborative technology and discovery engine. CZ Biohub SF itself supports some of the brightest, boldest engineers, data scientists, and biomedical researchers to investigate the fundamental mechanisms underlying disease and develop new technologies that will lead to actionable diagnostics and effective therapies. We are guided by our values of scholarly excellence; disruptive innovation; hands-on engineering/hacking/building; partnership and collaboration; open communication and respect; inclusiveness; and opportunity for all.
Our Vision
- We pursue large scientific challenges that cannot be pursued in conventional environments
- We enable individual investigators to pursue their riskiest and most innovative ideas
- The technologies developed at CZ Biohub San Francisco facilitate research by scientists and clinicians at our home institutions and beyond
Diversity of thought, ideas, and perspectives are at the heart of CZ Biohub Network and enable disruptive innovation and scholarly excellence. We are committed to cultivating an organization where all colleagues feel inspired and know their work makes an important contribution.
The Opportunity
The Chan Zuckerberg Biohub San Francisco is embarking on a comparative virology initiative that strives to map how cells are wired and remodeled in health and disease by making phenotypic and multiomic measurements of cells undergoing perturbations such as viral infection or gene knock-out. For this we combine molecular biology, cell line engineering, imaging, transcriptomics, proteomics, and data science. We build large datasets and use them to draw new biological insights. You will have opportunities to publish, innovate, and influence the future of biology. We offer competitive salaries and benefits, with a commitment to equity and inclusion.
The Genomics Platform is seeking a curious, energetic, and talented Research Associate to use long read and short read sequencing technologies to understand how transcriptomics in development and viral infection are dynamically remodeled over time and under a variety of perturbations using single cell and spatial transcriptomics. This is a great opportunity for candidates with a strong interest in molecular and cellular biology as well as cutting-edge single-cell and genomic technologies to expand their skills and expertise, supported by experts in a highly collaborative and well-funded scientific environment.
This role will be based in San Francisco initially, with a planned transition to Redwood City in two years.
You will
- Learn and implement cutting edge techniques including bulk, single cell, and spatial transcriptomics, CRISPR, and next generation sequencing under the mentorship and supervision of senior researchers.
- Perform basic molecular biology (nucleic acid isolation, PCR)
- Learn to automate protocols and utilize liquid handlers.
- Collaborate with personnel from different technology platforms (proteomics, computational microscopy, bioengineering, computational biology) and research groups (cell biology, zebrafish development, infectomics, virology).
- Troubleshoot protocols, develop clear experimental pipelines, maintain detailed records, analyze results, and contribute ideas to research projects
You have
- B.Sc . or Masters in Molecular Biology, Genetics, Cell Biology, Biochemistry or a related discipline
- At least 2 years of molecular biology experience in a research laboratory setting
- Passion for research
- Enthusiasm for cross-team collaboration and open science
- Team-oriented mindset
- Experience and excellence in documenting experiments
- Excellent written and oral communication skills
Nice to have -
- Experience with transcriptomics and sequencing library preparations
- Experience with microscopy, immunofluorescence and in situ hybridization
- Programming experience with Python and R
Compensation
The San Francisco, CA base pay range for this role is Research Associate I = $66,000.00 - $91,000.00 and Research Associate II = $76,000.00 - $105,000.00. New hires are typically hired into the lower portion of the range, enabling employee growth in the range over time. Actual placement in range is based on job-related skills and experience, as evaluated throughout the interview process.
What We Provide
- Resources to disrupt and innovate at the frontiers of our knowledge of biology and disease
- A collegial and collaborative environment consisting of diverse expertise
- Access to collaborators, resources and facilities at our three partner universities (Stanford University, UC Berkeley, and UC San Francisco) and at partner organizations in the SF Bay Area and beyond
- Competitive compensation and benefits commensurate with the experience
If you’re interested in a role but your previous experience doesn’t perfectly align with each qualification in the job description, we still encourage you to apply as you may be the perfect fit for this or another role.
