Elk Grove Village, Illinois, (pop. 33,127), a strategically located, progressive community that is home to the largest consolidated business park in North America, is seeking a dynamic, detailed and skills-oriented candidate for the position of Mechanic in the Public Works Department. Elk Grove Village is located in Cook and DuPage Counties adjacent to O'Hare International Airport and is home to approximately 3,600 businesses, located in its 5.4 square mile Business Park.
The Public Works Department maintains Village-owned property, infrastructure, and equipment. It consists of the General Operations Division, the Utilities Division, and the Engineering Division. The Department maintains water and sewer utilities, public streets and rights-of-way, urban forestry, land, engineering, facilities, and fleet services.
The Mechanic is a union position that performs skilled work in the inspections, maintenance and repair of automotive, construction and other related municipal equipment under the general supervision of the Fleet Foreman. Municipal equipment includes ambulances, fire apparatus, aerial trucks, dump trucks and snow and ice control equipment to name a few. Candidates must have a passion for public service and have a willingness to work overtime and respond to off-hour emergencies which include special events and snow and ice control events. Designated weekend standby is required.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Analyzes and diagnoses the cause and extent of mechanical defects through visual inspection, diagnostic testing, and/or test-driving/test-operating and performs the necessary repairs.
  • Makes mechanical repairs including brake jobs, clutches, engines, suspensions, steering, drive trains and routine maintenance.
  • Understands and utilizes service manual test procedures, schematic drawings and diagrams to diagnose and repair complex electronic systems.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: High school diploma or GED equivalent is required. Four years of automotive repair experience, including one year at the journeyman level in the repair and maintenance of automotive and road maintenance equipment, vocational training in automotive and diesel technology preferred, or an equivalent combination of experience and training. Good physical condition and strong mechanical aptitude as this is a shop labor position.
LICENSES AND CERTIFICATIONS: Must possess and maintain a valid Illinois Driver's License with a safe driving record. Required to have Class B Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with air brake and tanker endorsement or obtain license within six (6) months. Required to have USEPA compliant refrigerant certification and relevant Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) and Emergency Vehicle Technician (EVT) certifications or obtain within eighteen (18) months of hire.
HOURS OF WORK: 40 hours per week OPENING DATE: August 25, 2025
PAY RANGE: $33.77 - $49.16 per hour CLOSING DATE: September 8, 2025 at 5:00 pm
Candidates will only be offered the starting salary of $33.77 based on union contract.
