Duties And Responsibilities
Teach courses in the assigned subject area through multiple modes of teaching (ie. in-person, online, hybrid) ;
Prepare course syllabus and reports related to teaching and student progress;
Assess student learning in terms of course competencies and program learning outcomes;
Submit self-assessment reports based on student and peer evaluations;
Work under the general supervision of the discipline coordinator/division chairperson;
Integrate teaching efforts with other instructors in the discipline area;
Maintain one office hour per week for each class taught (20 minutes per credit per week);
Classes may be offered In-person, online, evenings, and/or weekends;
Classes may be offered off-site as when required
Minimum Qualifications
Functionally native oral and written fluency in Hawaiian, the ability to communicate in English, and one of the following:
Qualifications
Master’s degree in Hawaiian language;
OR
Master’s degree in Hawaiian as a Second Language;
OR
Master’s degree in the study of the culture or history of the people who speak Hawaiian;
OR
Master’s degree in Linguistics, ESL, Education or another language. At least 12 credits of advanced coursework in second language methodology, Hawaiian literature, Hawaiian culture, or any combination thereof;
OR
Bachelor’s degree in Hawaiian language
AND
3 years related work experience;
OR
Bachelor’s degree in Hawaiian language as a Second Language
AND
3 years related work experience;
OR
Bachelor’s degree in the study of the culture or history of the people who speak Hawaiian
AND
3 years related work experience;
OR
Bachelor’s degree in Linguistics, ESL, Education or other language. At least 12 credits of advanced coursework in second language methodology, Hawaiian literature, Hawaiian culture, or any combination thereof
AND
3 years of related work experience. Desirable Qualifications:
Evidence of experience integrating speaking, writing, technology and thinking skills in the teaching of the Hawaiian language;
Experience teaching Hawaiian language in-person and online;
Successful teaching at the post-secondary level as substantiated by student and peer assessments;
Evidence of ability to work in a collegial manner with peers, department chairs, and administrators;
Successful use of technology to support all modes of instruction;
Commitment to the mission and values of the community college with its open-door and multicultural populations;
Evidence of commitment to Kapi‘olani Community College's mission of positioning the college as a leading Native Hawaiian/indigenous-serving higher education institution
Ability to initiate, execute, and complete projects, including setting specific objectives and measuring results;
Demonstrated evidence of the ability to develop Hawaiian literature and/or culture courses;
Comprehension or understanding of the American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages (ACTFL) scale.
