The Civil Litigation Division defends the District of Columbia, including District agencies, officers, and employees, in civil lawsuits filed in the Superior Court of the District of Columbia and the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia seeking monetary damages, equitable remedies, and other relief.
Duties And Responsibilities
Trial Attorney, LA-0905-13
The Office of the Attorney General for the District of Columbia seeks a Trial Attorney for General Litigation Section IV of the Civil Litigation Division. Attorneys within CLD handle a variety of matters, including employment discrimination claims, personal injury and other common law tort cases, and federal constitutional civil rights litigation, among others.
The successful candidate will have an individual caseload of approximately 25 active civil cases and will be expected to serve as first chair on various litigation and trial teams. The incumbent will prepare and file pleadings, serve and respond to written discovery, take and defend depositions, file and respond to procedural and dispositive motions, negotiate settlements, conduct trials and contested hearings, and litigate disputes regarding attorney’s fees. There is substantial contact with client agencies and individual clients. The position requires broad knowledge of civil trial and pretrial processes and relevant civil litigation experience.
The position requires civil litigation experience. Prior civil litigation experience may include trials or evidentiary hearings, motions, and discovery practice, taking and defending depositions, and a thorough knowledge of the Federal Rules of Civil Procedure. Experience in one or more substantive areas where the Division practices is highly desirable.
The successful candidate should be a self-starter and have excellent research and writing skills and be able to handle multiple deadlines in a fast-paced environment.

Incumbent must have a Juris Doctor (J.D.) from an American Bar Associated (ABA) accredited law school at the time of appointment. A minimum of 3 years’ specialized experience is required.

Incumbent must have a Juris Doctor (J.D.) from an American Bar Associated (ABA) accredited law school at the time of appointment. A minimum of 5 years of specialized experience is required.
LICENSE AND CERTIFICATION
The incumbent must be an active member in good standing of the District of Columbia Bar or have the ability to waive in and be admitted within 360 days of appointment. An appointee to the Legal Service shall remain a member in good standing of the District of Columbia Bar and admitted to practice in the U.S. District Court of the District of Columbia during his/her employment in the Legal Service. If not currently a member of the District of the Columbia Bar, before appointment, the successful candidate must send proof that his/her completed District of Columbia bar application has been submitted to the District of Columbia Bar.
