Senior Accountant
Finance Office JOB SUMMARY: The Senior Accountant supports the University's financial operations by performing a range of accounting functions, including but not limited to, preparing/entering journal entries, reconciling general ledger accounts, analyzing financial data, assisting with tuition billing analysis and assisting in month end closings and year-end audits. Providing reports on comparative AR levels, payments received, and other reports needed by management. This role ensures accurate and timely processing of financial transactions in compliance with the University's policies and applicable accounting guidance. SALARY INFORMATION: In compliance with New York's Pay Transparency Act, the annual base salary range for this position is $70,000 - $80,000. Adelphi University considers factors such as departmental budgets, scope and responsibilities of the position, candidate's work experience, education/training, key skills, internal peer equity, as well as market and organizational considerations when extending an offer. The above hiring range represents the University's good faith and reasonable estimate of the range of possible compensation at the time of posting. An annual base salary higher than the range may be warranted in circumstances where a candidate has demonstrable equivalent prior higher education experience at another University. REPORTS TO: Senior Manager of Accounting RESPONSIBILITIES & DUTIES: Prepare routine and recurring journal entries, including accruals, adjustments, and reclassifications to ensure accurate monthly and annual financial reporting. Prepare monthly reconciliations for key balance sheet accounts and recommend adjustments as needed. Serve as a backup for the senior accountant in areas such as bank reconciliation, meal plan accounting and student related charges. Create, input and maintain Excel spreadsheet related to tuition billing tables. Assist in monitoring fund balances, restricted accounts and project related transactions as needed. Support month-end and year-end closing processes. Assist with annual audit preparation, including responding to auditor requests and gathering required data. Participate in the review and improvement of accounting procedures, processes and internal controls. Perform other related duties and ad hoc projects as assigned. Assist with researching accounting issues and documenting conclusions in accordance with established accounting policies. Work with Financial Operations in creating the annual tuition and fee rate card to be approved by the Board of Trustees. Update SAAS tables with all new tuition, fee, course fee, insurance, dorm rates, etc. for each academic year. Assist Financial Operations in updating the Tuition and Fee report with actual and projected figures on a monthly basis, reconciling to the general ledger. Work with outside partners to prepare and submit for payment all income share reconciliations and payments, as per contacts. Service on University committees and taskforces as needed to represent the Finance Office. Analyze adequacy of reserve for doubtful accounts and recommend changes as needed. Support the budget process, as needed. Perform other job-related duties, as assigned. REQUIREMENTS: (Knowledge, Skills and Abilities) Ability to manage multiple priorities, work independently, and meet deadlines. Ability to embrace change and be flexible with potential process changes. Excellent analytical, organizational, and communication abilities. High level of integrity, confidentiality and ethical standards. Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to build relationships across departments. Demonstrate management, coaching and team leadership skills. Knowledge of Accounting principles and procedures. Strong computer skills for using Windows, Microsoft Word, Excel, Google Suite and Email. EDUCATIONAL/EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS: Bachelor's degree in Finance or Accounting is required. Master's degree is desirable. CPA or CPA-eligible is preferred. Minimum of four to seven years of progressive accounting experience, with at least one to two years in a supervisory leading role. Experience in higher education, nonprofit and governmental accounting is strongly preferred.
