Eligible for an Annual Discretionary Cash Bonus Target: 10%
Eligible for an Annual Discretionary Restricted Stock Units Bonus Target: 10%
These discretionary target bonuses may be awarded semi-annually based upon your achievement of performance goals and targets.
About This Job
Axos Bank is seeking a detail-oriented and experienced Senior Underwriter to join our team, specializing in Single Family Residential Construction loans. This role is ideal for someone with a strong background in conventional jumbo loan underwriting and construction budget analysis. You’ll be responsible for evaluating loan documentation, assessing borrower creditworthiness, and ensuring compliance with investor and bank portfolio guidelines. If you have a deep understanding of FNMA, FHLMC, HUD, and construction-related financials, and enjoy working in a fast-paced, risk-sensitive environment, we’d love to hear from you.
Responsibilities:
Review all loan documentation submitted for initial underwriting decision, conditional approvals, and clear to close Evaluate credit history, income, assets and current liabilities for ability to repay Conduct careful risk analysis and exercise good judgment to determine if loans conform to applicable underwriting guidelines for sale on the secondary market Requires proficiency and in-depth knowledge of FNMA, FHLMC, HUD, and investor guidelines Review and respond to quality control and investor suspense items related to Credit for loan sale Assist Construction Risk department in reviewing construction budgets, including hard and soft cost breakdowns, contingency review, 3rd party analysis reports and LTC/LTV validation Review construction policy title reports and construction-related insurance policies Reconcile budget line items and ensuring existence of clear paper trail to support costs and disbursements
Qualifications:
Bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance, mathematics or statistics preferred 3+ years of agency underwriting experience with conventional jumbo loans 2 years of Construction Loan Monitoring or related experience Guideline knowledge of Fannie and Freddie Strong background in residential construction budgets, including hard and soft cost breakdowns, contingency review, and LTC/LTV validation Proficient in reconciling budget line items and ensuring a clear paper trail exists to support each cost and disbursement Experience working with general contractor agreements, including cost-plus vs. fixed-price structures Familiarity with construction-related insurance policies, such as builder’s risk, general liability, and workers’ comp Competence in reviewing title reports, identifying lien risks, and ensuring proper endorsements Skilled in identifying red flags in GC contracts, including scope clarity, schedules or draw requirements Strong knowledge of underwriting philosophy, techniques, national/local filing regulations and guidelines Ability to effectively assess risk Strong negotiation skills
