Shipping Clerk/Material Handler
Monday through Thursday, 6:00 am to 4:30 pm. Overtime as needed. Flexible work schedule does apply to this position. Primary duties and responsibilities: Transfers work in process or finished goods from production departments to other departments within plant or to shipping department for preparation of outgoing shipments. References work order routers, material I.D. tags, material requests forms, material relocation forms or follows oral instructions to ascertain materials or containers to be moved. Compares identifying information and counts, weighs, or measures items of incoming and outgoing shipments to verify information against bills of lading, invoices, orders, packing slips or other records. Determines method of shipment, utilizing knowledge of shipping procedures and customer requirements. Provides information for preparation of paperwork to accompany outgoing shipments. Affixes shipping labels on packed cartons identifying shipping information on cartons. Assembles containers or selects pre-assembled containers. Inserts items into containers, using spacers, fillers, VOC bags, and protective padding where necessary. Binds containers and/or cartons to containers and palletizes with shrink wrap, metal strapping, tape or staples. Stamps or applies identifying information and shipping instructions onto crates or containers. Utilizes shipping hold area to stage parts in that are typically awaiting mechanical testing or certification, using hold log to document input and release of parts from area. May unpack and examine incoming shipments, reject damaged items, and inform appropriate personnel of same. Examines outgoing shipments to ensure shipments meet customer requirements. Maintains inventory of shipping materials and supplies. Operates lift truck or hand truck to move or convey shipments from shipping/receiving platform to storage or work area or to load or unload delivery vehicle. May direct others in preparing outgoing and receiving incoming shipments. Receives damaged or defective good returned to establishment and informs appropriate personnel, such as office staff and quality assurance. May be required to perform secondary operations such as washing and/or oiling parts. Places finished products in stock locations and accurately completes Finished Goods Transaction sheet and routes sheet to Office Staff for entry into Global Shop System. Cleans shipping/receiving department area using broom and shovel/dust pan. Removes snow from shipping/receiving department external entrance platform. Reviews paperwork on incoming raw material and semi-finished parts for accuracy, and signs for receipt of delivery, then delivers paperwork to Q.A. Department for receiving process. Loads and unloads materials onto or from pallets, racks and shelves. Conveys materials (bar stock, semi-finished and finished parts, ferrous and non-ferrous scrap & chips) to or from storage or worksites to designated areas, using hand truck, lift truck or overhead crane, cart or by hand. Opens bundles of bar stock using band cutters or hand tools. May also band bundles together using banding machine and clincher. May operate band saws and chamfer machine to prepare bar stock for machining operations. May perform secondary operations such as tumbling, oil removal, deburring, washing, oiling or sorting parts. Shovels scrap chips into spinner bucket or chip hopper, or dumps tubs into Reclamet system. Operates Reclamet system or chip spinner to separate cutting oil from scrap chips. Operates centrifugal oil purifier that filters foreign matter from used cutting oil to make oil usable. Responsible for maintaining common cutting oil system. Sorts scrap according to type of metal and weighs barrels of scrap metal then attaches identifying tags on scrap. Communicates information regarding requirements for disposal of scrap. Performs general plant maintenance such as: floor cleaning and scrubbing using automatic floor scrubber; cleaning light fixtures and bulbs, windows, walls and electrostatic preceptor cells; cleans lunchroom; stocks and maintains vending machines. Maintains cleanliness of work areas and grounds, and removes snow from walks, drives and areas between buildings. Picks up and disposes of garbage and recyclable office paper and cardboard from offices and locations throughout plant. Responsible for maintaining inventory of a variety of plant supplies such as: oils, brushes, gloves, floor dri, shovels, brooms, etc. Responsible for opening out buildings at the beginning of shift, and securing at the end of shift. Performs other related duties and assignments as required. Worker Functions: Judging the readily observable functional, structural, or compositional characteristics (whether similar to, or divergent from obvious standards) of data, people or things. Attending to the work assignment instructions or orders of supervisor. Talking with and/or signaling people to convey or exchange information. Includes giving assignments and/or directions to helpers or assistants. Using body members, hand tools, and/or special devices to work, move, or carry objects or materials. Involves little or no latitude for judgement with regard to attainment of standards or in selecting appropriate tool, object, or materials. Education and Experience: High School diploma or GED required. One year related experience. Reasoning Ability: Apply commonsense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral or diagrammatic form. Deal with problems involving several concrete variables in or from standardized situations. Mathematical Skills: Calculate surfaces, volumes, weights and measures. Add, subtract, multiply and divide all units of measure with common and decimal fractions. Language Skills: ability to read safety rules, instructions and methods and procedures in mechanical drawing and layout work; write using proper format, punctuation, spelling and grammar; speak utilizing correct English.
