The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (UNC-Chapel Hill or Carolina) seeks a collaborative, diplomatic and strategic leader to serve as the next Executive Vice Chancellor and Provost (provost). All applications and nominations are welcome.
Founded in 1789 as the nation's first public university, for 230 years, UNC-Chapel Hill has built upon its historic legacy with innovative teaching, groundbreaking research and dedication to public service. Carolina's faculty attract more than $1 billion in research funding each year—fueling a collaborative, high-impact research enterprise that drives innovation, advances knowledge, and improves quality of life for people across North Carolina and the world. Carolina is at the heart of what's next, preparing talented students from different perspectives and life experiences to become creators, explorers, innovators and leaders in North Carolina and beyond. In Chapel Hill, students develop a voice for critical thought, constructive dialogue and the courage to guide change. They connect to the future they are already shaping and prepare with one another to solve the world's greatest challenges. In its third century — an era of pioneering study and research — UNC-Chapel Hill is harnessing the very best of a fast-changing world.
Reporting directly to Chancellor Lee H. Roberts, the provost oversees 16 schools, including the University Libraries, and 13 units. The next provost has an extraordinary opportunity to lead the academic vision that will elevate the University while fulfilling its commitment to serve the state of North Carolina by creating new knowledge and application, improving communities, and positioning its scholars and students on the leading edge of discovery and innovation. The new provost will provide strategic vision and advance academic priorities that are in the long-term best interest of Carolina, wisely crafting its direction, seeing the trending challenges, and determining its response. They will passionately champion Carolina's mission and value, its faculty, staff and students, and be skilled in the diplomacy required to protect academic freedom.
At the minimum, the successful candidate will have an earned terminal degree and scholarly credentials to be tenured at the rank of full professor at Carolina, substantial leadership and administrative experience, and demonstrated success in building interdisciplinarity, advancing research, fostering community and supporting student success.
