The successful candidate will play a key role in administering and securing enterprise Unix/Linux systems, ensuring compliance with DoD cybersecurity standards, and supporting shipyard and naval operations. This role requires technical expertise, strong troubleshooting skills, and the ability to collaborate across multidisciplinary teams in a high-tempo environment. Key Responsibilities
Administer and maintain Unix/Linux systems (Red Hat, CentOS, SUSE, Ubuntu, Solaris, AIX). Perform system installation, configuration, patching, kernel upgrades, and package management. Automate and streamline operations using scripting and configuration management tools (Bash, Python, Ansible). Implement system hardening, apply DISA STIGs, and remediate vulnerabilities to ensure IA/DoD compliance. Manage user accounts, authentication, and directory services (LDAP, Kerberos, NIS, Radius/TACACS+). Monitor system performance, availability, and security using enterprise monitoring tools (Nagios, Zabbix, Splunk, Elastic Stack). Support storage systems and integrations (NFS, iSCSI, SAN, NetApp, ZFS). Provide Tier II/III troubleshooting, root-cause analysis, and incident resolution. Maintain backup/restore operations and disaster recovery plans. Collaborate with system administrators, network engineers, cybersecurity personnel, and shipyard operations teams. Create and maintain documentation for system builds, procedures, and troubleshooting. Mentor junior administrators and provide technical guidance. Technical Expertise
Strong background in Unix/Linux operating systems and enterprise-level troubleshooting. Proficiency in scripting and automation (Bash, Python, Ansible). Experience with security baselines, DISA STIGs, and DoD/RMF/NIST compliance. Knowledge of authentication and authorization services. Familiarity with virtualization and containerization (VMware, Docker, Podman, Kubernetes). Skilled in storage integration and file system administration. Experience with enterprise monitoring and log analysis tools. Required Qualifications
Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or related field (or equivalent experience). 5+ years of Unix/Linux system administration in enterprise or DoD environments. Demonstrated experience with cybersecurity compliance and vulnerability management. Ability to provide Tier II/III operational support and root-cause analysis. Strong communication and technical documentation skills. Active DoD Secret clearance (minimum). Preferred Attributes
Experience supporting Navy, shipyard, or DoD IT environments. Familiarity with DoD cybersecurity tools (HBSS, ACAS). Active Top Secret clearance with SCI/SAP eligibility. Certifications such as RHCSA/RHCE, CompTIA Linux+, Security+, or CISSP. Experience with IT modernization, cloud adoption, or infrastructure transformation. Proven ability to support mission-critical operations with minimal downtime.
