Job Summary

Collects and removes waste materials, refuse and recycling from all areas of the campus. Participates in trash removal services and general maintenance needs for assigned events, completing all tasks including football, baseball, work orders, etc. as assigned. This role also includes pickup and delivery of supplies and equipment to designated academic and athletic facilities, performing maintenance and restorative floor care, and conducting soft wash and/or pressure washing of building entrances and sidewalks.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities

Collects and disposes of refuse from campus and assists Office of Sustainability with recycling collection as coordinated with the Manager of Sustainable Operations. Assists in the setup and removal of waste and recycling receptacles for large public areas and campus events, ensuring these spaces are clean before and after use. Maintains the cleanliness and upkeep of university facilities and grounds by utilizing cleaning equipment (blowers, pressure washers), performing floor care (scrubbing, buffing, vacuuming, shampooing), and ensuring the sanitation of waste disposal areas (dumpsters, bins) and surrounding environments, including odor control. Also assists with cleaning coverage in academic and athletic facilities as directed.

Transports and distributes necessary supplies and equipment to designated university buildings in a timely and accurate manner. Responds to emergency situations during and after hours. Emergency situations may include property damage, personal injury, water leaks, flooding, overflowing restroom fixtures, broken window or door glass, and accidents resulting in the appearance of bodily fluids (blood, vomit waste, and urine).

Serves as a member of the Physical Plant Essential Personnel and as directed by the Physical Plant participates in pre-emergency preparations and post emergency recovery efforts.

Performs additional duties as assigned by Custodial Leadership.

Minimum Qualifications

Valid Driver’s License and the ability to obtain a driver’s clearance to operate university vehicles; six months of related experience and/or training.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

Exhibits strong active listening skills, characterized by attentiveness, patience, and the ability to understand and respond appropriately without interrupting. Proficient in the safe operation of various equipment including forklifts, University vehicles, carts, trailers, and standard hand tools (hammers, screwdrivers, pliers).

Ability to establish and maintain a good rapport with university faculty and staff, students, and the general public.

Ability to work successfully as a member of a team and independently with moderate supervision.

Ability to understand and follow instructions.

Ability to work evenings, nights, and weekends as necessary.

Ability to respond quickly to emergencies.

Knowledge of, or the ability to learn, University policies and procedure

Preferred Qualifications

High school diploma or general education degree (GED). Three (3) months of related experience in a higher education setting or commercial cleaning environment.
