NYC Department of Environmental Protection (NYC DEP)

The NYC Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) enriches the environment and protects public health for all New Yorkers by providing 1.1 billion gallons of high-quality drinking water, managing wastewater and stormwater, and reducing air, noise, and hazardous materials pollution. DEP is the largest combined municipal water and wastewater utility in the country, with nearly 6,000 employees. DEP's water supply system is comprised of 19 reservoirs and 3 controlled lakes throughout the system’s 2,000 square mile watershed that extends 125 miles north and west of the city.

DEP’s Green infrastructure program designs, constructs, and maintains a range of Green Infrastructure assets that collect stormwater from streets, sidewalks, and other hard surfaces before it can enter the sewer system or cause local flooding. By reducing the amount of stormwater that flows into the Sewer System, green infrastructure helps prevent Combined Sewer Overflows and improves the health of local waterways.

The Bureau of Environmental Planning and Analysis at the New York City Department of Environmental Protection is seeking an Administrative Horticulturalist for the NYC Green Infrastructure Maintenance Program. This is a management class position, with several assignment levels. The Administrative Horticulturalist will plan, coordinate, and oversee various horticultural activities throughout the city.

Develop and negotiate contracts, including cost, time estimates, and funding sources related to green infrastructure horticultural projects.

Direct a staff of project management professionals managing the implementation of green infrastructure projects.

Oversee green infrastructure maintenance projects from initiation to completion.

Manage technical project operations including planning, budgeting, scope development, vendor procurement, design, and construction management.

In the absence of a supervisor, may assume supervisory duties.

Minimum Qualifications

Baccalaureate degree in horticulture, arboriculture, or landscape architecture with four years of full-time horticultural experience, including two in a supervisory or managerial role; or

Equivalent education and experience, with at least a high school diploma or equivalent, and one year of supervisory or managerial experience.

Preferred Skills

At least five years of experience in engineering design, construction, or project coordination.
