Summary

This position supports Mercy's philosophy of patient centered care by providing guidance to laboratory staff to ensure timely and accurate patient results. The Core Laboratory Manager is responsible for technical, financial, operational, regulatory, and personnel oversight of the Core Lab, including Hematology, Coagulation, Urinalysis, Chemistry and Immunochemistry, and Transfusion Services.

Job Duties

Ensure that accurate and clinically relevant information is communicated with patients, their families, and co-workers at hand offs and other times as needed. Take all measures necessary to ensure that the appropriate and involved parties have communicated necessary information in order to allow for the best possible patient outcome Ensures compliance with all regulatory requirements and for performance and competency of all direct reports Ensures proper inventory and ordering of department supplies Responsible for appropriate scheduling and staffing levels Responsible for hiring, training, performance evaluations, and corrective action for direct reports Develops policies and procedures Evaluates and implements new instrumentation and technology Communicates effectively with staff, peers, physicians, patients, and families, including written, verbal, and listening Conducts staff meetings Monitors section performance and initiates improvement plans as needed Meets operating budget and productivity targets for area of responsibility Actively participates in Laboratory Leadership activities and other teams, committees, and councils as assigned Maintains and improves skills by participating in at least one continuing education activity annually Promotes continuing education for direct reports Acts as a resource for laboratory medicine information to providers and others Acts as a champion for Lean principles and practice in the Core Laboratory, including staff training and auditing Provide advanced problem solving, troubleshooting, interpretation/consultation, verification of specimen quality and test results. Follows Mercy's safety guidelines, carries out job- specific safety duties and responsibilities, and promptly reports any unsafe conditions, situations, incidents and injuries.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Knowledge of laboratory testing procedures Knowledge of regulatory requirements, including CAP, COLA, CLIA, TJC, and FDA Ability to work quickly and efficiently under pressure without sacrificing quality Ability to multi-task, prioritize, and work with interruptions Skill to use standard laboratory instrumentation Skill to use the laboratory information system (LIS) Ability to critically think about test results in relation to patient condition Ability to recognize and correct problems with quality control Ability to recognize problems and troubleshoot laboratory equipment Ability to detail-oriented Ability to complete appropriate documentation and paperwork clearly and completely Knowledge of basic management principles Ability to coach, develop, and hold staff accountable

Professional Experience

Required: Five years in a clinical laboratory setting, with two years of supervisory experience.

Education

Required: Bachelor's degree in medical laboratory, biological, or chemical science

Licensure, Certification, Registration

Required: Certification as an MLS(ASCP), MT(ASCP), or MT(AMT)

Physical Demand Requirements

Light: Exert up to 20 lbs. of force occasionally and/or up to 10 lbs. of force frequently
