**INTERNAL POSTING-Only temporary or permanent NCDOT employees or layoff candidates with the NC Department of Transportation eligible for RIF priority reemployment consideration as described by GS 126 may apply.** This position is for a Vehicle/Equipment Repair Technician III (VERT III) in the Durham County Equipment Shop located in Division 5. Positions in this class perform skilled small engine, automotive, and/or heavy equipment repair. Employee will be expected to multi-task while maintaining focus. Duties include inspection and service to highly complex mechanical systems analysis using advanced diagnostic instruments and software; conducting parts/systems failure analysis; and the calibration, adjustment and operation of engine analyzers. Employee must be able to perform semi-skilled and skilled mechanic work on systems such as preventive maintenance; brakes; steering; tires and lubes; wheels, rims, and hubs; transmission (auto); charging system; cranking system; ignition system; lighting system; cooling system; exhaust system; fuel system; power unit; hydraulics; air conditioning; instruments and gauges; air intake system; suspension; transmission (Manual) axle driven rear and axle front (non-driven). Standard operational guidelines, shop safety procedures, vendor manuals and manufacturer publications and bulletins are normally established, and employees apply technical knowledge and skills, occasionally modifying standard practice and procedures due to unusual situations. Employee must routinely determine materials, techniques, and tools to accomplish work assignments. Work requires experience in welding and steel fabrication/machining. Positions in this class may perform as back up to shop supervisors using SAP. The type of repair work to be done may require consultation with a higher-level technician or a supervisor. Employee will also be responsible for transporting new and current equipment as needed.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities / Competencies Management prefers applicants with the following : Experience in Heating and A/C repairs including electronic and vacuum controls Experience in performing electrical/ electronic diagnostics and repair of complex wiring on two of the following: light, medium, heavy-duty trucks and heavy equipment Experience in performing hydraulic system diagnostics, repairs, and rebuilds on a variety of equipment Experience in the diagnostics and repair of powertrain components Experience in inventory management including parts, fuel, and lube commodities.
Additional Expectations:
Employee is required to furnish a complete set of mechanics tools. Position requires work during any adverse weather such as snow and/or ice, tornadoes, hurricanes, etc. which can lead to working extended daily hours, weekends, and holidays. Must have the ability to operate forklift and pick-up truck as needed. The selected candidate must be able to legally operate CDL required equipment/trucks with both manual and automatic transmissions at the time of hire or within 360 days of hire date. Either possession of a current Class A Commercial Driver's License with N endorsement on the date of hire, OR the North Carolina Commercial Driver's License must be obtained through completion of an on-the-job training and all requirements mandated by Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations (Federal Registry 49 CFR 383) within 360 days of the date of hire. Pre-employment drug testing required. As a condition of employment, a release form (ALCDRG-01) and a background statement (ALCDRG-06) must be completed and signed allowing the NCDOT to check with previous employers for the past three years about controlled substances and alcohol testing. **Offer of employment will be contingent upon successful completion of NCDOT post offer employment evaluation.**
