Job Summary
An employee in this class performs skilled preventative and restorative maintenance of the City's fleet and equipment, including inspecting, diagnosing, overhauling, repairing, and maintaining gasoline, diesel and mechanical equipment and machinery such as backhoes, mini excavators, automobiles, dump trucks, pumps (including water, hydraulic and air pumps), generators and air compressors. Work performed ranges in difficulty from routine part replacement and repairs to major repairs. This is a fully seasoned skilled level capable of independently carrying out most assignments typical of the discipline.
Requirements
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
  • Diagnoses and determines the extent of mechanical problems using various types of shop equipment, machinery, precision instruments and specialized tools and replaces or rebuilds equipment based upon cost and quality of equipment operation.
  • Diagnoses, services, and repairs a wide variety of gasoline and diesel-powered vehicles and equipment including engines, fuel systems, hydraulic systems, air brakes, hydraulic brakes, air conditioning systems, cooling systems, body and chassis, small engines (mowers, weed eaters and chain saws), pumps, generators, and trailers.
  • Performs automotive and equipment maintenance including: performing tune-ups; inspecting and replacing brakes; inspecting and replacing belts and hoses; replacing and adjusting headlights; replacing tires; servicing air conditioners; replacing fuel and water pumps, radiators, thermostats, etc.
  • Services engines, transmissions, differentials, fuel systems, braking systems, climate control systems and hydraulic systems by changing fluids and filters and flushing systems in accordance with manufacturers' specifications.
  • Maintains and repairs both wheeled and tracked light, medium and heavy equipment such as backhoes, mini excavators, tractors, dump trucks, bucket trucks and street sweepers.
  • Trains assigned employees in maintenance and repair methods, procedures, and techniques; leads, assigns, and inspects the work of subordinates and participates in all associated work; verifies work performed for accuracy, proper work methods, techniques and compliance with applicable standards and specifications; ensures adherence to safe work practices and procedures.
  • Receives work orders and plans and coordinates routine or recurring maintenance and repair projects.
  • Establishes priorities and schedules work allowing for unscheduled projects that may occur.
  • Performs preventive maintenance work on equipment and vehicles such as lubricating, greasing, checking belts, hoses, etc. as needed to minimize downtime of equipment and employees.
  • Obtains oral and written quotes for parts, materials, and equipment according to City policies and requisitions supplies, materials, tools, and equipment needed to fulfill duties and complete assignments.
  • Consults with operators of vehicles and equipment to determine the nature and extent of mechanical problems.
  • Inputs information into a computer, database, or related software to maintain records such as repair, maintenance, equipment, and service history.
  • Performs road tests and operational checks of vehicles and equipment to insure quality of repairs and service.
  • Responsible for ensuring all work and activities are performed safely and in accordance with City policy.
  • Performs other duties and responsibilities as assigned.
Performance Requirements (Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities)
  • Knowledge of lubricating systems and oils used in lubricating light, medium and heavy-duty vehicles, and equipment.
  • Knowledge of the general operation of gasoline and diesel engines and the proper methods for servicing light, medium and heavy-duty vehicles, and equipment in conformance with industry standards.
  • Knowledge of standard automotive repair tools and equipment and specialized tools utilized in the servicing of light/medium/heavy, hydraulically operated gas/diesel automotive powered equipment.
  • Knowledge of the methods, materials, tools, and standard practices of the automotive and heavy equipment mechanic trade.
  • Knowledge of the safe and proper use and care of manual, electrical, gas and hydraulic powered tools and equipment used in the assigned functional area.
  • Knowledge of the operating characteristics of a wide variety of vehicles, equipment, and machinery.
  • Knowledge of preventative maintenance and repair programs for light, medium and heavy-duty vehicles, and equipment.
  • Knowledge of all types of gasoline and diesel engines, automatic and manual transmissions, hydraulics, shop equipment and procedures.
  • Knowledge of OSHA requirements and potential safety hazards and precautions applicable to fleet maintenance operations.
  • Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions; write simple correspondence; present information in one-on-one situations (e.g., to Supervisor, co-workers, etc.).
  • Ability to apply detailed written and oral instructions.
  • Ability to perform general math functions, including addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division as needed.
  • Ability to read and interpret various documents such as safety rules, operation and maintenance instructions, procedure manuals and related documentation.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
  • Ability to set priorities and accomplish work activities with a minimum of supervision and be able to develop and maintain harmonious working relationships with others, both inside and outside the organization.
  • Ability to work independently to carry out assignments to completion.
