Position Summary Information

General Summary

The Fleet Technician performs journeyman level automotive and equipment, repair tasks within the Fleet Services Division.

Essential Functions

AUTOMOTIVE AND EQUIPMENT: Performs routine preventive maintenance service and repairs on WSSC Water's fleet including a variety of automobiles, trucks, and equipment; Performs inspections to ensure vehicle safety and durability; Diagnoses, replaces and/or overhauls components, such as standard and anti-lock brake systems, carburetors, generators, alternators, starters, distributors, electronic ignition and fuel injection systems, hydraulic systems, and electronic diesel engine control systems; Repairs units such as engines, transmissions, differentials, clutches, and parts such as gears, valves, pistons, rods, and bearings, etc., (transmissions and clutches on equipment only); Performs road tests, completes work orders and ensures that vehicles pass operating, safety, or performance tests; Performs diagnostic and repair services on automotive and truck power train, body, and chassis computer systems and related wiring, sensors and controls; Performs service calls to include roadside repairs to disabled units; Uses Fleet computer system to access/update work orders, perform administrative tasks, review repair history, etc.; Performs fuel site maintenance and pump readings when assigned; May be required to perform Maryland Vehicle Emissions inspections; Repairs/replaces interior upholstery, trim, accessories, and other components to include SIR/air bag, body controls, HVAC, wiring harnesses; Makes vehicle/equipment modifications and adds accessories to WSSC Water vehicles and equipment; Uses specialized welding equipment and processes, such as MIG welders and plasma cutters; Performs routine general repair and maintenance on vehicles and equipment, as assigned. Drives a vehicle to conduct WSSC Water business. EQUIPMENT:

Performs mechanical repair tasks on diesel and gasoline internal combustion engines, including mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, and pneumatic systems not commonly found on automobiles and ordinary trucks; Discusses, assigns and reviews equipment malfunctions with employees, traces and locates problems, and determines nature and extent of repairs; Repairs heavy construction equipment such as dozer-loaders, excavators, tractors, graders, and air compressors; Overhauls heavy duty transmissions, clutches, and drive trains and aligns repaired units to the related mechanism, for example, engine and clutch mechanism; Repairs or replaces parts such as, distributors, injectors, injection pumps, control valves, brakes, pistons, bearings, and starters to conform to specifications; Performs road tests, completes work orders and ensures that vehicles pass operating, safety, or performance tests; Uses a computer terminal to enter repair data and work orders; Drives a vehicle to conduct WSSC Water business.

Required Knowledge, Skills, And Abilities

Skilled in the use of state-of-the-art diagnostic and test equipment, tools, and procedures used in the repair and maintenance of automotive, trucks and mobile construction equipment, such as digital multimeters, hydraulic and pneumatic circuit testers, scan tools, PC-based diagnostic software, lab oscilloscopes, precision measuring equipment, and other applicable test equipment, to perform necessary repairs; Demonstrated competency in the diagnosis, maintenance, repair and adjustment of gasoline and diesel engine systems, air brake systems, and components, such as computerized engine monitoring systems as well as electronic ignitions; gasoline and diesel fuel injection systems and electrical/electronic cooling and lubricating systems; Ability to install, diagnose, and repair air conditioning systems and hydraulic and pneumatic systems; Ability to use electric, gas and arc welding equipment; Ability to understand and use manufacturers' service manuals and electrical diagrams, parts catalogs, and other repair manuals considered to be general industry standards; Some knowledge in the use of computer terminals; Ability to perform strenuous repair tasks. Minimum Education, Experience Requirements

Graduate from Automotive Technical Institute or Post High school automotive Trade School; 6 months of experience using a computer terminal in a shop environment. OR High School diploma or equivalent; 3 year's vehicle and/or equipment repair experience; 6 months of experience using a computer terminal in a shop environment.

Additional Requirements

Valid driver's license with no more than 4 points and the ability to obtain a WSSC Water driver's permit within 90 days of hire or transfer; Must pass Department of Transportation physical and possesses a DOT Medical Card; Must obtain and maintain the following with 12 months of hire o Refrigerant Recycling and Recovery certification by ASE or MACS; o Class A Commercial Driver's License with Tank Endorsement.

NOTE: Technicians must furnish their own hand tools sufficient to perform maintenance and repair tasks in a professional manner.

Preferences

Master ASE certification in Automobile or Light/Medium/Heavy Truck (vehicle specific certifications, i.e., Ford or General Motors are acceptable). JCB, Case, or other Construction Equipment Certifications also a plus.

Salary $29.61-$50.18
