Position Title: Director of Humanities
Location: Central Office
Reports To: Senior Director of Curriculum & Instruction
Job Overview: The Director of Humanities is responsible for overseeing the development, implementation, and continuous improvement of curriculum, instruction and student achievement for the district in the humanities.. This position will provide leadership, direction, and support to teachers and staff in the areas of English Language Arts, Social Studies, History, and ensure coordination with curriculum and instruction in the visual and performing arts. The Director will collaborate with district and building administration, faculty, and external district partners to ensure that students receive high-quality Tier 1 instruction, and Tier 2 and 3 support services that align with district goals, state standards, and best practices in the Humanities fields.
Responsibilities: Curriculum/Instruction Development & Leadership: Lead the development, alignment, and implementation of K-12 Humanities curricula in English Language Arts, Social Studies, and History. Ensure that curricula are designed to promote critical thinking, literacy, cultural awareness, and global citizenship. Coordinate curriculum revisions, ensuring alignment with state standards, district objectives, and current research. Evaluate the effectiveness of existing curricula and recommend improvements based on assessments, feedback, and data analysis. Support the implementation of the district vision for curriculum & instruction through work with building learners, curriculum directors and instructional coaches.
Professional Development & Support: Provide ongoing professional development opportunities for teachers to enhance their instructional practices in Humanities subjects through external partnerships and in collaboration with district based teams of highly skilled educators. Facilitate workshops, coaching sessions, and collaborative planning sessions for teachers, and work with building-based instructional coaches to support their coaching practices. Foster a culture of continuous learning and improvement within the Humanities department.
Assessment, Data Analysis, and MTSS: Assist in the development and review of formative and summative assessments for Humanities subjects. Use student performance data to identify trends, make instructional recommendations, and implement interventions. Monitor and assess student progress in Humanities subjects, using both qualitative and quantitative data to inform instruction. Work collaboratively with other district and school leaders to build out an MTSS system to better support reading and writing skills for struggling and advanced learners. Provide reports and updates to district leadership regarding student outcomes, curriculum progress, and departmental needs.
Collaboration & Stakeholder Engagement: Collaborate with other directors, administrators, and staff to ensure a cohesive and comprehensive approach to district-wide curriculum initiatives. Communicate effectively with parents, students, and community stakeholders about the district's Humanities programs, goals, and achievements. Represent the Humanities department at district meetings, state meetings, and in state/national organizations related to Humanities education.
Budget Management: Assist in the development and management of the budget for the Humanities department, ensuring that resources are allocated effectively to support instructional goals. Oversee the selection and procurement of instructional materials, technology, and resources to support Humanities curriculum and instruction.
Leadership: Supervise and evaluate selected Humanities department personnel Work with building leaders and content leads to develop coherent curriculum and instruction in Humanities subjects.
Equity & Inclusion: Ensure that the Humanities curricula and instructional practices promote diversity, inclusion, and equity for all students. Foster an environment that values diverse perspectives, cultures, and histories. Other responsibilities as assigned by the Senior Director of Curriculum & Instruction
Education and Experience Required: Master's degree in Education, Curriculum and Instruction, or humanities field Minimum of 5 years of teaching experience in Humanities or related subjects, with at least 3 years in a leadership or administrative capacity DESE Supervisor/Director License in a Humanities discipline or eligibility for licensure. Teacher certification in Early Childhood PK-2, Elementary 1-6, or ELA or social studies 5-12
Skills & Competencies: Experience with curriculum development, instructional leadership, professional development Knowledge of current research, trends, and best practices in literacy instruction, including science of reading Strong leadership, communication, and interpersonal skills Expertise in data analysis and the ability to make data-informed decisions Ability to manage budgets and resources effectively Commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion in education. Ability to collaborate effectively with a wide range of stakeholders
Work Year: Twelve (12) months a year, 230 days
Salary Range: Salary in accordance with the Non-Union Directors Salary Schedule ($130,000 to $145,000)
