Position Summary:
The Vice President of Finance is a key member of the executive leadership team, responsible for the strategic oversight and hands-on management of the organization's financial operations. This role ensures sound fiscal stewardship, compliance with nonprofit financial regulations, and alignment of financial practices with the organization's mission and goals. The VP of Finance will lead budgeting, forecasting, accounting, external audits, and financial reporting processes, supporting an annual operating budget of approximately $5 million.
Key Responsibilities:
Strategic Financial Leadership
Advise executive leadership and the Board of Directors on financial planning, budgeting, cash flow, and investment priorities.
Lead the development of long-term financial strategies in alignment with organizational goals.
Serve as a key liaison to the Finance Committee of the Board.
Financial Operations & Oversight
Oversee the preparation of monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements and dashboards.
Manage cash flow, banking relationships, and investment accounts.
Ensure proper internal controls, accounting standards, and compliance with GAAP and nonprofit financial regulations.
Direct annual budgeting process and monitor budget-to-actual performance.
Grants, Contracts & Compliance
Oversee financial aspects of government and foundation grants, including reporting and compliance.
Ensure accurate allocation of restricted and unrestricted funds.
Support fundraising and program teams in budgeting and financial planning for proposals and reports.
Audit, Tax & Risk Management
Lead annual audit process and interface with external auditors.
Oversee preparation and filing of IRS Form 990 and other required filings.
Ensure appropriate insurance coverage and risk mitigation policies.
Team Leadership
Supervise finance and accounting staff or vendors.
Support cross-functional collaboration and build financial literacy across departments.
Qualifications:
Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field (CPA or MBA preferred).
Minimum 7–10 years of progressive financial leadership experience, ideally in the nonprofit sector.
Strong knowledge of nonprofit accounting (GAAP, fund accounting, and grant compliance).
Proficiency in accounting software (e.g., QuickBooks, Financial Edge, or similar) and Microsoft Excel.
Demonstrated success in financial planning, budgeting, and strategy.
Exceptional communication and leadership skills.
Candidates are required to complete a criminal background check through the State of South Carolina and Federal Bureau of Investigation; and Pass scheduled and/or random drug tests.
