SSAB
SSAB is one of the largest North American producers of steel plate and coil, serving many industrial markets including energy, construction, agriculture and transportation. SSAB operates five state of the art facilities strategically located in key regions across the U.S.
SSAB has nearly 1,200 highly skilled employees in the U.S. Jobs at SSAB range from machine operators and sales people to advanced engineers and corporate professionals in HR, finance and more. SSAB offers challenging careers and comprehensive benefit program designed to keep employees and their families healthy and secure.
The
Reliability Engineer
plays a critical role in supporting SSAB's steelmaking operations by driving asset reliability across the Electric Arc Furnace (EAF), ladle metallurgy, and caster systems. This role ensures safe and reliable operation of complex equipment under demanding conditions, focusing on eliminating chronic failures, reducing unplanned downtime, and optimizing life cycle performance. The Reliability Engineer also supports innovation by integrating predictive technologies, leading Root Cause Failure Analyses (RCFA), and collaborating with operations and maintenance to sustain world-class reliability practices.
Main Responsibilities
Analyze equipment performance and downtime trends for high-value assets such as EAFs, ladle furnaces, and continuous casters; identify chronic failure modes and implement corrective actions. Develop and maintain preventive and predictive maintenance strategies tailored to heavy industrial equipment (motors, drives, hydraulics, cooling water systems, automation systems.) Lead RCFA and FMEA processes for major failures; document findings and ensure sustainable corrective actions are implemented. Collaborate with operations, maintenance, and engineering to resolve reliability issues and implement long-term solutions that reduce maintenance costs and increase throughput. Evaluate asset life cycle strategies including spare parts stocking, component rebuilds, and equipment replacement planning. Provide reliability input for capital projects, ensuring new equipment designs meet SSAB safety, performance, and reliability standards. Apply predictive technologies (e.g., vibration analysis, thermography, oil/lubrication analysis, IBA Analyzer) to proactively identify equipment degradation and prevent failures. Monitor key reliability KPIs (power-on times, yield impact, MTBF, MTTR, OEE) and communicate results to drive accountability and improvement. Champion continuous improvement initiatives tied to SSAB's EFESO production pillar system, focusing on waste elimination, safety, and energy efficiency. Ensure compliance with OSHA, environmental, and internal SSAB safety standards in all reliability initiatives. Mentor maintenance and operations personnel on equipment care, failure prevention, and reliability best practices. Serve as a reliability subject matter expert (SME) across the Primary End, supporting EAF through caster operations. About You
Required
High school diploma or equivalent. 5-8 years of experience in reliability, maintenance, or continuous improvement within heavy manufacturing or steelmaking. Proven ability to lead RCFA and implement corrective actions in high-stakes, fast-paced environments. Knowledge of equipment failure modes common to EAFs, casting, and auxiliary systems (mechanical, electrical, automation, hydraulics.) Strong background in project management and cross-functional collaboration. Proficiency in Microsoft Office, CMMS systems, and data analysis tools (e.g., Excel, Tableau, IBA Analyzer.) Excellent leadership, problem-solving, interpersonal, and communication skills. Demonstrated commitment to safety, quality, and continuous improvement. Preferred
Bachelor's degree in engineering (mechanical, electrical, industrial, or related.) 8+ years of reliability or maintenance experience in steelmaking or heavy industry. Certifications in reliability technologies (vibration analysis, thermography, lubrication, NDT, etc.) Certified Project Manager (PMP or equivalent.) Advanced CMMS experience (Maintenance Connection preferred.) Familiarity with EFESO or similar continuous improvement frameworks. Our Offer
At SSAB we use our values - driven, true and ahead - in making everyday decisions, keeping the customer at the heart of what we do. When joining SSAB you will become part of an organization of passionate problem solvers working together on important challenges.
