What You Will Do This position will be filled at the R&D Engineer 3 or 4 level, depending on the skills, education, and experience of the selected candidate. Additional responsibilities will be assigned if hired at the higher level. The Advanced Sources and Detector (ASD) Project is seeking a senior engineer to serve as either the Accelerator Coordinator or Lead Design Engineer (LDE). Nicknamed Scorpius, the project involves fabricating, installing, and commissioning a ~20 MeV linear induction electron accelerator in support of subcritical experiments at the U1a underground complex. This position will be filled at either R&D Engineer 3 or 4 level depending on skills and experience. Accelerator Coordinator
The Accelerator Coordinator will work with control account managers and the technical leader to execute design, procurement, fabrication, and assembly of the accelerator system (~$180M scope). Responsibilities include coordinating with SMEs, ensuring proper documentation, overseeing assembly and testing, and supporting installation and commissioning. Coordinate fabrication, assembly, and testing of the accelerator subsystem, managing design changes. Ensure quality assurance and project requirements are met. Work with the Cost Account Manager to meet cost and schedule goals. Identify opportunities for value engineering. Support installation and integration at the test stand and U1a complex. The role reports to the Group Leader for Technical Support and Project Execution, with some travel required. Lead Design Engineer
The Lead Design Engineer will oversee the final design of the accelerator, downstream transport, and systems, working with system leads, vendors, and procurement teams. Responsibilities include design updates, analysis, testing procedures, and supporting installation and commissioning. Support the project as a responsible engineer per ASD procedures. Prepare design products meeting standards and requirements. Perform structural, thermal, and other analyses. Develop inspection, assembly, and test procedures. Provide technical support during procurement, fabrication, and installation. Interface with procurement, QA, and vendors to ensure delivery quality. Mentor junior engineers and provide technical guidance. The position reports to the Group Leader for Technical Support and Project Execution and involves some travel. What You Need
Minimum Job Requirements: Experience with accelerator systems, including vacuum, thermal management, control, alignment, testing, and documentation. Experience with precision machine design, GD&T, structural and thermal analysis, proficient in Creo and PDMLink. Ability to work in a fast-paced project environment, adhering to processes for design, procurement, and nonconformance reports. Effective communication skills and team collaboration experience. Master's Degree in Engineering and 6 years of related experience; Ph.D. may be preferred. Additional for R&D Engineer 4: Extensive expertise in accelerator systems. Significant leadership and team management experience. Position requires 12+ years of experience or equivalent, with a Master's Degree; Ph.D. preferred. Desired Qualifications: Experience with linear induction accelerators. Experience at NNSA design labs. Active Q clearance. Work Environment: Location: onsite at LANL in Los Alamos, NM.
