Incumbents to this position operate a variety of specialized and heavy-duty automotive equipment in the repair of water mains and replacing of fire hydrants. Positions in this class are involved with routine manual operation of this equipment and are responsible for its safe and efficient operation. Incumbents to this position are able to drive any piece of equipment, with the exception of a bus, regardless of tonnage. S/he follows general directions, including work orders to determine work to be done and routes to be takes from the Caulker Supervisor I. Periodic work inspections are made by superiors. Supervision may be exercised over personnel assigned by the superior. Examples of work (Illustration Only)

Operates a backhoe for excavation in public's right of way for water main repairs, replacing hydrants, loading and unloading gravel etc.; - contends with utility services in the street such as gas, electric and telephone lines; May be required to operate a cherry picker to load and unload heavy pieces of pipe and valves, which must be lowered into place to facilitate the repairs to the water distribution system; May be required to operate an excavator; Reports problems with equipment and documents same; Performs minor maintenance work on equipment, i.e., daily checking of zerk fittings and grease when necessary; Performs manual work in connection with the operation of the specialized heavy-duty equipment; Wears safety equipment as required; Helps to set up and maintain safety zones; Performs related duties as required. Minimum Qualifications

Promotional, Continuous and permanent status as an Equipment Operator, Truck Driver, Truck Driver (Streets), Caulker, or Machine Operator (Water) in any city department for one year. In addition, all applicants must meet the following: One year of full-time experience in the operation of specialized heavy-duty equipment including a backhoe and dump truck. Verification of experience, affidavit from employer, must be presented at time of filing application. OR, Verifiable training in the operation of a backhoe and dump truck. Training certificate must be presented at time of filing application. SPECIAL REQUIREMENT 1.) Possession of a current Class B Commercial Drivers License issued by the NYS Department of Motor Vehicles, which must be presented at time of filing application and maintained during employment. Note: License must allow you to operate vehicles with air-brakes. 2.) All incumbents may be required to participate in training on the Cherry Picker and Excavator and obtain a training certificate issued by the Department of Public Works, Parks & Streets or an authorized agency, during employment in this title. Note: Verifiable part-time experience will be pro-rated to meet full time experience requirements. Open Competitive One year of full-time experience in the operation of specialized heavy-duty equipment including a backhoe and dump truck.
