The Mechanical Lead is responsible for supervising and coordinating the daily activities of mechanical crews in the maintenance, repair, installation, or construction of equipment and piping systems. This role ensures that work is completed safely, efficiently, and in accordance with technical specifications, project schedules, and quality standards.
Key Responsibilities:
Direct and oversee the work of mechanical technicians, pipefitters, millwrights, and welders. Plan and allocate work based on priorities, schedules, and manpower availability. Read and interpret mechanical drawings, P&IDs, isometrics, and equipment manuals. Supervise installation, maintenance, and repair of mechanical systems such as pumps, valves, piping, compressors, exchangers, turbines, and rotating equipment. Perform quality checks to ensure compliance with project specifications and safety standards. Coordinate with planners, engineers, safety personnel, and other trades to ensure smooth workflow and conflict resolution. Monitor progress, troubleshoot issues, and provide technical guidance in the field. Ensure proper use and care of tools, materials, and equipment. Enforce company safety policies and procedures including LOTO, hot work, confined space entry, and PPE use. Maintain accurate work records, time sheets, and reports using CMMS or project systems. Mentor junior crew members and support skills development. Qualifications:
Education/Experience:
High school diploma or GED required. Technical/vocational training in mechanical systems or industrial maintenance preferred. 5-7 years of hands-on mechanical experience in an industrial or construction setting, with at least 1-2 years in a lead or supervisory capacity. Certifications (Preferred):
OSHA 30 Certification NCCER or similar craft certification (Pipefitting, Millwright, etc.) Rigging and lifting certifications Welding qualifications (if applicable) Skills:
Strong knowledge of mechanical systems, tools, equipment, and practices. Proficiency in reading and interpreting blueprints, manuals, and technical drawings. Excellent leadership, communication, and organizational skills. Ability to identify mechanical problems and implement timely, cost-effective solutions. Familiar with CMMS and basic computer software (Excel, Outlook, etc.). Physical Requirements:
Ability to lift 50+ lbs., stand or walk for extended periods, climb ladders, and work at heights or in confined spaces. Tolerance for exposure to noise, dust, chemicals, and varying weather conditions. Willingness to work overtime, shifts, weekends, and respond to urgent job site needs.
