Inwood Academy for Leadership Charter School is a tuition-free public charter school that began as an idea among community members who longed to see more educational choices offered to the children of Washington Heights and Inwood. The
Facilities Associate
at IAL is responsible for assisting in the maintenance and upkeep of the school buildings and grounds, ensuring a safe, clean, and operational environment for students, staff, and visitors. This role includes tasks related to building maintenance, repairs, custodial work, and ensuring compliance with safety regulations. The Facilities Associate reports to the Operations Manager and works collaboratively with the school's administrative team.
Hours: 7am to 5pm, possible late nights and weekends
Responsibilities:
Perform routine maintenance and minor repairs related to plumbing, electrical systems, HVAC, and general building upkeep. Conduct daily inspections of school facilities to identify maintenance needs and safety concerns. Assist with custodial duties, including cleaning, sanitizing, and ensuring trash removal throughout the facility. Maintain accurate records of maintenance and repair work. Ensure compliance with building and fire codes by assisting in regular inspections and upkeep. Perform seasonal work such as snow removal, lawn care, and landscaping. Support the setup and breakdown of rooms for school events, meetings, and activities. Report facility-related issues to the Operations Manager and work collaboratively to address repairs and maintenance needs. Handle and store hazardous materials following safety guidelines. Assist with inventory and storage of maintenance supplies and school assets. Respond to urgent maintenance requests and emergencies as needed, which may occasionally require evening or weekend availability. Assist with moving and assembling furniture, setting up classrooms, and organizing storage spaces. Conduct regular safety inspections, such as checking fire extinguishers, exit signs, and emergency lighting. Ensure doors, locks, and security mechanisms are functioning properly. Identify and report pest control issues, and coordinate with external vendors if necessary. Accept, unload, and distribute school supplies, equipment, and deliveries. Ensure all school signage (e.g., exit signs, directional signs, and safety notices) is intact and visible. Help with posting/removing temporary notices, event posters, or maintenance warnings. Assist with preparing the building after school breaks, including cleaning and painting as needed. Provide basic help with setting up projectors, smartboards, or moving IT equipment when facilities modifications are required. Qualifications:
High school diploma or equivalent required. Experience in building maintenance, custodial work, or related fields preferred. Basic knowledge of plumbing, electrical systems, HVAC, and general repairs. Strong attention to detail and ability to troubleshoot facility-related issues. Ability to lift up to 50 lbs. safely and perform physical tasks such as moving furniture and equipment. Ability to follow safety guidelines and building regulations. Strong communication and teamwork skills. Familiarity with computer applications such as G Suite, Word and Excel is a plus.
