Senior Research Scientist Ceramics

GE Aerospace Research has a long history of innovating in ceramics for a wide variety of technologies and applications. As a Senior Research Scientist Ceramics, you will conduct research and development on advanced ceramic materials and processes for a range of current and future GE Aerospace products. Areas of focus include 3D printed ceramics for aerospace applications, ceramic coatings for extreme environments, and high temperature sensors. Roles and Responsibilities

You will: Lead and conduct basic and applied research in processes and technology for advanced ceramics of interest to GE Aerospace and external funding agencies. Develop novel advanced ceramics for various GE Aerospace products including but not limited to Commercial and Military products and transition these technologies to GE Aerospace. Develop manufacturing processes for new and existing advanced ceramics in a lab environment. Improve existing materials and processes to support current products. Identify technology trends in advanced ceramics and develop technical roadmaps to address them. Collaborate with GE Aerospace's internal product departments, global R&D sites, external and internal material developers, strategic suppliers, and universities. Characterize and identify degradation modes and approaches for improving the lifetime of advanced ceramics in extreme environments. Mentor less experience researchers. Prepare research proposals for external funding. Invent and patent when appropriate. Deliver effective presentations, reports, publications to GE Aerospace Research, GE Aerospace, government agencies, and professional societies when appropriate. Required Qualifications

PhD in Materials Science and Engineering or related discipline with a minimum of 7 years' experience or Master's degree in Materials Science and Engineering or related discipline with a minimum of 10 years of experience. Deep expertise in ceramic development and processing. Demonstrated understanding of ceramic property-process-microstructure relationships for advanced ceramics. Demonstrated ability to learn new areas of research. Demonstrated ability to solve complex technical problems. Excellent oral and written communication skills. Willing to work government funded programs. US Citizenship is required. Must be willing to work out of an office located in Niskayuna, NY. Must be 18 years or older. Desired Characteristics

Expertise in material and process development for bulk ceramics, additive ceramics, environmental barrier coatings, thermal barrier coatings, or other advance ceramic systems with complex microstructure requirements at multiple length scales. Expertise in characterization and testing of structural or functional ceramics. Experience working in leading government contracts and preparing proposals. Expertise with statistical analysis, data analytics, and statistical process control. Expertise with slurry development. Expertise with developing sintering and firing schedules. Very good understanding of thermodynamics, degradation kinetics, phase stability and diffusion in high temperature material systems. Experience leading cross-disciplinary research teams. Experience developing long-term strategic roadmaps for advanced technologies. Experience transferring technology from the laboratory to commercialization. Passion for hands on development and laboratory work. Demonstrated ability to adapt to multidisciplinary teams in a fast-paced dynamic working environment. Demonstrated ability to solve complex technical problems. Demonstrated excellence in research through peer reviewed publications. The base pay range for this position is 100,000 - 205,000 USD Annually. The specific pay offered may be influenced by a variety of factors, including the candidate's experience, education, and skill set. This position is also eligible for an annual discretionary bonus based on a percentage of your base salary.
