We want your knowledge and expertise!Job Summary and QualificationsThe Surgical Technologist Extern delivers high quality, patient-centered care by performing a variety of delegated basic patient care services to support the efficient operation of the surgical suite. Under the supervision of the Circulating RN, the Surgical Technologist Extern assists the surgical staff in the perioperative process in accordance with the Surgical Technologist Extern’s skills/training and the needs of the Department, and consistently assists the patient care team with maintaining a clean, well-organized, and safe patient care environment. The Surgical Technologist Extern is currently enrolled and in good standing in an approved school of surgical technology and can perform higher-level procedures once competency is achieved.What responsibilities you will handle:Collaborates with the Circulating RN and Surgical Tech to organize the operating suite with instruments, supplies, and equipment needed for the dayReviews daily cases to ensure adequate stockingEnsures proper functioning of equipment/instruments prior to proceduresAssists in creating and maintaining an orderly sterile instrument tableUtilizes physician preference cards for efficient setupAssists in preparing for emergency and add on cases rapidly and effectivelyAssists with providing care and comfort for the patient throughout the perioperative processTransports patients to and from surgical suite as neededAids in the transfer, positioning, prepping and draping of patients for surgical procedures in accordance with hospital standardsPerforms and/or assists in scrub/gown/glove process for self and teamAssists surgical team during each procedure as instructed, including passing instruments, operating specialty equipment, patient monitoring, handling of medications or specimens, replenishing supplies.Assists in completing all sponge, sharp, and instrument counts and reports all discrepancies to the nurse or surgeonAssists with room turnover, including cleaning, restocking of supplies, and setup/cleaning/removal of equipment and instrumentation as neededParticipates in patient and procedural verificationResponds to lifesaving situations, including fire and disaster situationsResponds promptly to on-call situations as scheduledHelps maintain a safe, organized environment for personnel and patientsDemonstrates commitment to patient safety initiatives including patient falls and restraintsEnsures patient privacy and comfortMaintains confidentiality of patient information and records, and advocates for patient rights as neededApplies the principles of asepsis to ensure the prevention of infection and maintain optimum patient careFollows universal precautions as required by hospital and OSHA policiesDemonstrates effective communication skills when interacting with patients, family members, physicians, and coworkersUtilizes appropriate chains of command to communicate pertinent informationUses system to report potential patient safety issuesWhat qualifications you will need:Basic Cardiac Life Support must be obtained within 30 days of employment start dateHigh School Diploma, GED, or equivalent PreferredMust be currently enrolled in an approved Surgical Technologist programHCA Florida Lawnwood Hospital is a 380-bed acute-care hospital.
