Job Summary:

The School Nurse, a licensed healthcare professional (Registered Nurse or Licensed Practical Nurse), is an integral part of the school community, responsible for providing comprehensive health services to students and staff under the clinical oversight of a Registered Nurse and/or licensed physician. This includes promoting student health, managing acute and chronic health conditions, administering medications, providing first aid, conducting health screenings, and acting as a liaison between home, school, and the medical community. The School Nurse plays a crucial role in creating a safe, healthy, and supportive learning environment for all students.

Key Responsibilities: Student Health Management: Assess student health status, identify basic health concerns, and assist in the development and implementation of individualized health plans (IHPs) and emergency care plans (ECPs) for students with chronic conditions or special healthcare needs,

under the supervision of a Registered Nurse. Review health records from entering students and assure compliance with Virginia Department of Health entrance requirements. Administer prescribed and over-the-counter medications safely and accurately according to physician orders and school board policy. Provide first aid and emergency care for student/staff injuries and acute illnesses, including managing medical emergencies such as allergic reactions, seizures, and diabetic emergencies,

with appropriate escalation to an RN or emergency services as needed. Monitor and manage communicable diseases within the school, implementing control measures and reporting as required by public health guidelines,

in collaboration with and under the direction of an RN. Identify students with chronic or special health care needs and provide direct care appropriately, including, but not limited to tube feedings, catheterization, colostomy care, wound care, etc. Additionally, case management of these students, by ensuring needs are met in the school setting, making appropriate referrals, training non-licensed personnel in care, etc. Ensure compliance with protocols, standard operating procedures, and other instruction provided by the nurse manager. Collaborate with parents/guardians, physicians, and other healthcare providers to ensure continuity of care for students. Health Screenings and Promotion: Conduct mandated health screenings (e.g., vision, hearing, scoliosis) and assist in making appropriate referrals for follow-up care,

under the direction of an RN. Promote healthy habits and disease prevention through health education, counseling, and collaboration with school staff on wellness initiatives. Identify and address barriers to student health and well-being. Documentation and Record Keeping: Maintain accurate, confidential, and up-to-date health records for all students, including immunizations, health assessments, medications administered, and health-related incidents. Maintain student health records: collect health related dated and complete reports required by school, district, and state regulations. Collaboration and Communication: Communicate effectively with students, parents/guardians, teachers, administrators, and other school personnel regarding student health needs and concerns. Serve as a resource for staff on health-related issues, providing guidance as appropriate to their licensure and scope of practice. Participate in IEP (Individualized Education Program) and 504 plan meetings for students with health-related accommodations,

contributing within their scope of practice. Liaise with local health departments, community health agencies, and medical professionals to coordinate services and referrals,

under the guidance of a supervisor. Environmental Health and Safety: Assist in maintaining a safe and healthy school environment, identifying and addressing potential health hazards. Contribute to the development and implementation of school emergency plans and protocols. Professional Development: Maintain current nursing licensure and certifications. Participate in ongoing professional development to stay abreast of best practices in school nursing and pediatric healthcare. Carries out other duties and responsibilities as assigned to meet organizational needs. Qualifications:

Education: For Registered Nurse (RN):

Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN) or Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) from an accredited college or university required. For License Practical Nurse (LPN):

Completion of an accredited LPN program required. Licensure:

Current, unencumbered Registered Nurse (RN) license

OR

Current, unencumbered Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) license, both issued by the Virginia Board of Nursing. Experience: Minimum of two (2) years of experience as a Registered Nurse or Licensed Practical Nurse, preferably in pediatric, community health, public health, or emergency care settings. Experience in a school health setting is highly desirable. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: Thorough knowledge of nursing principles and practices, including pediatric and adolescent health. Strong assessment, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills

(for RNs) ; ability to observe, report, and participate in care planning

(for LPNs) . Ability to manage medical emergencies calmly and effectively,

with appropriate delegation/supervision as per licensure. Excellent communication, interpersonal, and organizational skills. Ability to maintain confidentiality and adhere to ethical standards. Proficiency in using electronic health records and other relevant technology. Ability to work independently (within scope of practice) and as part of a team. Commitment to student-centered care and promoting a positive school environment. Current BLS/CPR/AED and First Aid certification required.

Physical Requirements:

The School Nurse position may require standing, walking, bending, lifting, pushing, pulling, reaching, and the ability to respond quickly to emergency situations.
