Special Education Primary Purpose:

Implement the special education assessment process. Assess the educational, learning styles, and program needs of students referred to special education services. Provide diagnostic information and work cooperatively with instructional personnel to provide the most appropriate programs for students with disabilities. Qualifications:

Education/Certification:

Master's degree in educational assessment

Valid Texas teaching certificate

Valid Texas educational diagnostician certificate

Special Knowledge/Skills:

Knowledge of diagnostic procedures, education of special education students, human development and learning theories

Excellent organizational, communication, computer, and interpersonal skills

Experience:

Two years teaching experience Major Responsibilities and Duties: Assessment

Receive student referrals and implement the assessment and evaluation process. Select and administer formal and informal assessments to determine student eligibility for special education services according to federal and Texas Education Agency regulations. Collect and organize relevant assessment data from student's cumulative folder, classroom teachers(s), principal, support staff, parents, related-service personnel, and other sources as needed. Participate in the Response to Intervention (RTI) process. Conduct classroom observations and teacher and parent interviews for assessment purposes. Conduct Full and Individual Evaluations (FIE), eligibility reports, and all required assessments within state and federal guidelines. Explain assessment results and provide instructional recommendations for teachers and administrators. Collaborate with other assessment personnel to determine eligibility and implement special-education services. Assist the campus administrators in facilitating the Admission, Review, and Dismissal (ARD) Committee. Provide interpretation of assessment data for proper placement and development of appropriate Individual Education Plans (IEPs) according to district procedures and applicable state and federal law. Assure that all assessment requirements are within state and federal guidelines. Report any discrepancies to the campus administrator and the special-education director. Consultation Schedule and send out notices for all ARD Committee meetings with parents, administrators, teachers, support staff, and outside agencies. Schedule and send notices for staffing with parents, administrators, teachers, support staff, and outside agencies. Provide staff development training to assist school personnel in identification and understanding of students with disabilities, IEP development, ARD procedures, assessment, and special-education related issues. Assist classroom teachers and other school personnel in understanding and implementing the IEP including enactment of Behavior Implementation Plans (BIPs). Consult parents concerning the educational needs of students and interpretation of assessment data. Consult parents, teachers, administrators, and other relevant individuals to enhance their work with students receiving special-education services. Participate in home visits to facilitate ARD meetings and communication with students and parents. Participate in and provide input into transition planning for students. Conduct meetings with special-education staff and provide the minutes to the campus administrator and Special Education Director. Assist the campus administrators in researching concerns or complaints involving special education. Assist the campus administrators with recruitment, interview, selection, and assignment of special-education staff. Program Management Develop and maintain effective individual and group relationships with students and parents. Assist in the selection of assessment materials and equipment. Develop and coordinate a continuing evaluation of the assessment program and make changes based on findings. Compile, maintain, and file all computerized reports, records, and other documents required. Maintain the security and confidentiality of all physical reports, records, and other documents while in your custody. Comply with policies established by federal and state law, State Board of Education rule, and local board policy in the areas of assessment, placement, and planning for special-education services. Comply with all district and local campus routines and regulations. Remain apprised of the latest research, data, procedures, laws, and policies to maintain expertise in the assessment field. Participate in professional development activities to improve skills, knowledge, and proficiency of job-related duties. This may include travel outside of the district. Assists in regular file reviews to ensure compliancy including verifying the presence of documents. Communication Maintain a positive and effective relationship with staff and supervisors. Maintain emotional control under stress. Regular districtwide travel to multiple work locations. Moderate lifting and carrying may be required in the performance of duties. Occasional prolonged and irregular hours.
