The
School Nurse
Assistant: LPN
handles administrative and simple medical responsibilities under the direction of a licensed, registered school nurse. Duties include providing first aid for injuries, recording symptoms of sick students, administering doctor-approved medication to students, providing emergency care when necessary, and keeping records of each student who visits the nurse's office.
QUALIFICATIONS: Licensed by the Commonwealth of Massachusetts Department of Public Health as a Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN); Certified as CPR/AED/First Aid Instructor by the American Heart Association or the American Red Cross; Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to communicate clearly and effectively, both orally and in writing, with children and adults; Commitment to remain current in field knowledge, evaluation and counseling strategies; Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the Superintendent may find appropriate and in conformity with state licensure requirements. DUTIES:
Administers doctor-approved medication to students, and keeps records of each student who visits the nurse's office; Assists School Nurse with direct and indirect care given to students in compliance with school district policies, professional standards of practice, physician's orders, and the Individual Health Plan; Administers basic health care and First Aid for the purpose of providing appropriate care for ill, medically fragile and/or injured children; Assists School Nurse with collaboration with parents, students, health care providers, and/or other agencies for the purpose of promoting needed treatment, securing information and complying with legal requirements; Provide health monitoring of medically fragile students during transportation times to and from school and nursing duties for field trips as assigned. Other duties as required.
PHYSICAL WORKING CONDITIONS:
Work involves student interaction, and is performed primarily in a school health office setting or on transportation vehicles, both within and outside of the district as assigned.
