Sets temperatures, screw and line speed on extruder as indicated on run card. Starts machine when proper temperatures are reached. As first extruded material emerges from die, "pulls" material with pliers, etc. and feeds through various stages of downline equipment, requiring planned positioning of equipment to accommodate initial scrap as well as rapid response to unforeseen conditions such as initial shape of extrusion. Observes operation to detect workpiece defects or machine malfunction. Adjusts initial temperature and speed settings of extruder and puller based on dimensions and experience. Positions or repositions heat, cooling, guides, etc. to bring extrusion profile, finish, and color increasingly close to print or sample piece specifications. Measures workpiece dimensions to refine accuracy of overall operation to tolerances set by customer, allowing for shrinkage as part cools. Checks for specified quality and tolerances using caliper and other measuring devices; sets final cutting and arranges for counting and packaging of finished pieces at end of line. Determines number of boxes required of finished product keeping in mind safe weight limits set by customers or carriers. Checks for correct shipping labels. May turn operation over to less skilled operator. Calculates if additional raw material is required and adds to hopper as needed or informs hopper filler. Monitors quality of run periodically. Records quality assurance (QA) data at a minimum every hour. Completes run card on new runs. Moves finished product using hand truck or pallet jack.
