Senior Control Engineer

The P ER POWER SUPPLY CONTROLS Department of the P OPERATIONAL TECHNOLOGY Division at Hawaiian Electric Company has one management vacancy available. (Role: Professional) JOB FUNCTION: Works independently to provide expert level skills and technical support for on-going assessment, support, improvement, and extension of the capabilities of the Operational Technology (OT) Control Systems. Provides hands-on and supervisory support to meet corporate goals in service reliability, availability, and system efficiencies. Identifies, designs, implements, tests, and integrates systems to enhance and support the needs of generation controls and the systems they support. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: Maintains operating system, application software, modeling, graphic displays, application code and databases for the Distributed Control System (DCS). Provides 24x7 support to Electric System Operations personnel in the safe and timely operation of the Generation control systems. Maintains all process monitoring and control systems related to power generation. Performs network administrator functions and plans, research, and directs the installation, configuration, maintenance, operation and optimization of the data communication and telecommunication networks. Assists the technical personnel in the isolation, identification, and resolution of problems with the control hardware, helping to develop specialized test software and procedures as indicated. Establishes and administers contracts for hardware maintenance support. Provides technological expertise, support and maintenance of security functions and procedures regarding DCS applications. Ensures compliance with corporate security policies and documentation of exceptions. Performs hardware, operating system and software product installation, updates, and integration into the DCS. Investigaes and evaluates technological advances in computer architecture, hardware and software, proposes necessary improvements to insure DCS availability, reliability and cost effectiveness. Assist in the procurement process of new systems and equipment (development of specifications, bid packages, evaluation of bids, and selection). Makes database and display changes whenever applicable generation changes are made. Support testing of any changes. Writes, enters, and documents PLC logic and HMI programming systems. Tunes control loop systems to optimize performance based on engineering and operational conditions. Other duties as assigned. Participates in Company emergency response activities as assigned, including any activities required to prepare for such emergency response. BASIC QUALIFICATIONS: Knowledge Requirements: Expert knowledge in Process Control Engineering. Working knowledge of the remaining Control Engineering knowledge domains listed below. Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations. Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals. Ability to remain flexible in a demanding work environment and adapt to rapidly changing priorities. Strong interpersonal skills to influence and persuade various groups or individuals. Ability to mentor and develop junior team members and customers. In depth analytical, organizational, and conceptual skills to handle various work projects and programs. Demonstrated ability and motivation to learn new tools and products independently. Must have or be able to qualify for a State of Hawaii driver's license. Must meet the standards for frequent required driving positions stated in the Hiring Standards for Required Driving Positions policy. These standards may be adjusted periodically to meet business and safety objectives. Experience Requirements: A minimum of seven years working with power generation control systems at the control engineer level or equivalent.
