Research Scientist

The Research Scientist will be responsible for developing the foundation of new lead-based battery technologies, including the design of fundamental active materials, and conducting lab activities to support such development. The ideal candidate will have a knowledge of operational principles of scientific laboratory instrumentation and familiarity with techniques relating to existing and advanced battery technology. The Research Scientist demonstrates excellent materials characterization skills with an interest and demonstrated ability to synthesize and integrate those materials into various products aimed at a production environment. Responsibilities: Responsible for defining innovative materials, combinations of materials (that may be patented) and formulations achieving battery performance requirements that provide a competitive market advantage Responsible for the performance evaluation of new materials or new battery technology and architectures throughout the development process, from proof-of-concept to qualification Responsible for developing and validating new or existing analytical/testing methods on battery active material formulations associated with product development, manufacturing processes and battery applications Documenting activities in laboratory notebooks, equipment logbooks, test procedures, material specifications, etc. Proactively responds to issues related to materials quality of the characterization process and initiates resolution Works closely with Product Development Teams to develop world class battery science and processes, which enhance the leading position of C&D-Trojan's technologies and energy storage solutions Work to improve current materials and formulations of materials and processes by collaborating with suppliers, research institutes and strategic partners Prioritize tasks and responsibilities so that assigned duties are completed in a timely manner, within budget and meeting other resource constraints Work effectively in team-oriented projects and in a multi-project environment Support the needs of internal and external customers, and supplies as required Some travel to manufacturing facilities and suppliers is expected Qualifications: Master's degree in chemistry, chemical engineering, material science/engineering or related field required Ph.D. preferred 3+ years of experience in battery technology R&D with an emphasis on battery active material formulation and characterization experience with lead-acid batteries preferred Knowledge of and experience with energy storage testing instruments and electrochemical techniques such as EIS and CV Experience with physical characterization instrumentation and techniques such as SEM and XRD Must be able to prepare technical reports and presentations for internal and external contacts Excellent communication skills and ability to work well with others Salary range- $120k-$135k
