Legal Tech Hybrid New York, NY $140,000 $185,000 + Bonus + Equity Ready to take the lead on backend architecture at a high-growth AI startup backed by a global powerhouse? Were partnering with a fast-growing AI SaaS company building automation platforms for enterprise workflows. Though backed by a global professional services leader, they operate with the speed, autonomy, and culture of a startup, shipping fast and solving real-world problems for Fortune 500 clients. As they expand into finance and government, theyre hiring a Lead Backend Engineer to design core systems powering agent-based applications and enterprise integrations. This hybrid role is based in NYC, with 23 in-office days per week alongside a top-tier team of engineers, AI researchers, and product leaders. The Role: As a Lead Backend Engineer, youll join a cross-functional group responsible for building robust backend services that support real-time AI interactions, large-scale document processing, and integrations with enterprise systems. Youll work closely with AI/ML experts to bring intelligent agents to life, contributing to systems that enable automation across accounting, tax, and compliance domains. Youll have the opportunity to lead a small team of engineers, contribute to architectural decisions, and own end-to-end development of platform capabilities. Responsibilities include: Designing and implementing backend APIs and microservices using Python and FastAPI Building orchestration systems that interface with large language models (LLMs) Developing scalable data models using PostgreSQL and vector databases (e.g., pgvector) Integrating third-party APIs and building tools for enterprise-scale document ingestion Leading backend architecture for new AI-first products and features Collaborating with AI researchers, designers, and frontend engineers to shape product experience Contributing to DevOps practices (CI/CD, containerization, monitoring, performance tuning) Requirements: 68+ years of backend software engineering experience Strong proficiency in Python, FastAPI, PostgreSQL, and AWS Experience building and scaling production-grade APIs and distributed systems Hands-on experience integrating AI models or services (e.g., OpenAI, Anthropic APIs) Demonstrated ability to lead engineering projects and mentor small teams Strong communication and problem-solving skills Passion for building reliable, AI-powered systems from the ground up Bachelors degree in Computer Science or related field (or equivalent experience) Bonus: Experience with vector databases, embeddings, or semantic search Familiarity with enterprise security and billing systems Prior experience building zero-to-one products or working in startup environments The Benefits: Base salary of $160,000 $185,000, with bonus potential up to 15% Equity / Long-Term Incentives (RSUs) Full health, dental, vision, and mental wellness benefits How to Apply: Submit your resume via the Apply link.
