The Office of General Counsel (OGC), which provides legal advice and representation to Members, committees, officers, and employees of the House on matters related to their official duties without regard to political affiliation, is accepting applications for the position of
Assistant General Counsel . Duties
Core responsibilities include: Drafting district court pleadings and appellate briefs; Appearing in court in litigation matters involving the House or its Members, officers, or employees; Analyzing legal issues presented by House Members, committees, officers, and employees, and recommending solutions; Advising and counseling on a wide range of legal issues; Gathering facts to provide sound legal advice; Interacting with House leadership, committees, and other offices; Interacting with opposing counsel (government and private); Representing witnesses in investigative proceedings; Performing legal research on constitutional, statutory, and common law issues; Collaborating with other OGC attorneys and staff.
Qualifications
Minimum Requirements: Excellent academic credentials; At least three years of experience as a practicing attorney, including judicial clerkships; Excellent writing, analytical, and interpersonal skills; Good judgment; Ability to work with and provide high-quality legal advice to House Members, committees, officers, and employees, regardless of political affiliation; Interest in or desire to learn about the Legislative Branch.
Preferred Qualifications: Judicial clerkship or other government experience; Experience drafting dispositive motions and appellate briefs in federal courts; Understanding of the structure and operations of the Federal Government, especially the House of Representatives and the Department of Justice.
