Position Summary:
The Circulation Desk Assistant will perform basic circulation activities, assist patrons with
materials, and enforce library policies (security, borrowing, noise levels, disruptions). The
Assistant will help patrons with scanners and computers, answer basic questions, and make referrals
when needed. In between circulation duties, the Assistant will work on other library-related tasks
as needed or assigned. This position must work 10 hours per week. Availability to work evenings and
some Saturdays is required.
Job Responsibilities: • Assist patrons with borrowed materials, course reserves, requests, and other inquiries about
library materials, referring patrons to library staff when appropriate • Check materials in and out to patrons • Process Pick from Shelf requests and prepare them for fulfillment • Process requested items received from Northwestern Libraries via courier • Monitor patron scan requests and complete as submitted • Moniter Circulation email and phone • Assist patrons with printing, scanning, and other technology • Be responsible for the cash drawer and handle payment for fines, fees, community cards,
etc. • Be responsible for opening and closing the library when assigned to those shifts • Assist patrons with general library questions • Other duties as assigned
Preferred Qualifications: • Experience using the Microsoft Office Suite of programs, particularly Word and Excel • Excellent communication skills • Excellent attention to detail • Ability to follow precise procedures and instructions • Confidence in problem-solving and flexibility in changing from one task to another • Ability to work independently and work well with others • Familiarity with library collection and Library of Congress call numbers preferred • Ability to maintain confidentiality • Reliability and promptness • Availability to work evenings and weekends

Physical demands and work environment: • Physical demands: While performing the duties of this job, the employee must be able to stand,
walk, sit, use hands to finger, handle or feel objects, reach with hands and arms, climb stairs,
bend, crawl, and lift/move up to 50 pounds. Must be able to have repetitive wrist hand and/or
finger movement to type and work on computer. Must have finger dexterity and hand-eye coordination
to work on computer, telephone, and related office equipment. The individual will regularly be
