Summary Provide language interpretation and translation to assist Town staff in communicating with the public and assist Community Engagement team with implementing equitable and practical engagement practices that are inclusive of immigrant and refugee communities.

Essential Functions

Work with, and as directed by, the Town's Community Engagement team to complete engagement and language access tasks as assigned. Provide language interpretation across all Town departments for Town services, programs, and events. Provide feedback on multi-lingual community engagement to all Town departments on their community engagement projects. Assist with Language Access Plan and language justice training, including but not limited to: revising current training materials and designing new training materials. Assist with Town-wide community engagement, including but not limited to: participating in community meetings, communicating with community organizations, canvassing door to door, and collecting resident feedback. Cultivate and maintain relationships with community organizations and community members that speak languages other than English, including but not limited to: tabling at events and collaborating with organizations and residents on community projects. Translate brief text on a case-by-case basis. Minimum Qualifications To be considered for this position with the Town of Chapel Hill, candidates must:

Have at least

one

of the following:

U.S. high school diploma or GED equivalent U.S. college or university level English coursework completed U.S. university degree If none of the above apply, must pass an English language proficiency assessment.

Speak one of the following languages fluently: Burmese, Karen, or Spanish-must pass a language proficiency assessment. Have language interpretation and/or translation experience. Possess good oral and written communication skills. Be proficient with computers and software applications including Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint. Be willing to learn and able to work independently. Preference for candidates who:

Have professional certifications and/or certificates in language interpretation, translation, and/or language justice. Have community engagement experience working with immigrant and/or refugee communities. Supplemental Information

do not accrue

Town benefits and may not work more than 950 hours in a rolling 12-month period.

Temporary (Program Suppport) employees are not eligible to receive benefits.
