Position Summary

A member of the Acquisitions & Cataloging team in Burke Library, this part-time (.60 FTE equal to 1,092 work hours per year) position assists with a wide variety of tasks. The Technical Services Assistant has primary responsibility for processing all library materials for shelving, including spine labels, barcodes, book jackets, etc.; prepares materials for housing in Special Collections and Archives (SCA); creates, updates and maintains local holdings and item records in the library catalog; performs basic copy cataloging for recently published books; receives orders for physical books; checks in physical serials; performs basic book repair. Assists in maintaining the integrity of the Library's catalog and physical holdings through database maintenance activities.

Responsibilities Processes physical materials for the general collections (item records, barcodes, spine labels, etc.) (15%) Prepares materials for housing in SCA, consulting with staff in both Cataloging and SCA as necessary. (30%) Receives ordered books, shelf-ready books, standing orders, and physical serials. (15%) Performs basic copy cataloging for recent physical books acquired for the circulating collections. (15%) Performs basic book repairs on damaged books from the circulating collections. (15%) Processes withdrawals, location transfers, relabeling, and similar collection and database maintenance activities. (10%) Other duties as assigned Education and Experience

Bachelor's degree preferred. Previous successful experience in library technical services preferred. Equivalent combinations of education and experience may be considered. Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities

Ability to work comfortably with integrated library systems such as Alma Ability to do accurate and detailed work with minimal supervision after initial training. Ability to analyze problems and formulate solutions. Awareness of the issues and methods involved in handling fragile, often rare, print materials. Familiarity with cataloging standards and bibliographic records a plus. Good communication and interpersonal skills. Ability to work collaboratively within the Hamilton community and LITS.

Compensation Range:

$20.00 - $23.00 per hour
