Full-Stack Software Engineer (Data Pipeline Focus)
Bitwise is a leading provider of mission-focused intelligence solutions that advance national security for the Intelligence Community and Department of Defense. We're a small and growing company, so you can expect to hop in on the ground floor with us and be a consequential member of the team. You'll be more than a contract performer for us - you'll also be asked for ideas to improve our company and improve your career, and you'll contribute to our team culture. We value growth and community above almost all else, so we gather regularly for game nights, happy hours, tech talks, and plenty more. We think you'll like it here! But remember, Bitwise is not a cult. Join a high-impact, mission-driven team as a Full-Stack Software Engineer (Data Pipeline Focus), supporting a mature and well-established technical organization. You'll be a member of a 6-person team, which plays a critical role within a broader 20+ person development organization. Together, the team supports a robust web-based platform that integrates diverse publicly available information (PAI) sources into a powerful analytical tool used by hundreds of mission customers. In this role, you'll contribute across the stack, developing ingest pipelines, building scalable REST APIs, and facilitating data exploration and understanding. The platform supports large-scale data ingestion, complex queries, and interactive analysis. While your primary focus will be on the data pipeline layer, you'll collaborate closely with other sub-teams to ensure end-to-end functionality and performance. We're looking for a developer who is excited to contribute to all aspects of this system and who also brings an interest in improving team processes and tooling, particularly in ways that help us integrate new data sources more efficiently and deliver faster. This long-running software effort is known for its technical stability, team cohesion, and deep integration into mission-critical systems, offering you the opportunity to make meaningful contributions in a fast-paced, collaborative environment. Your contributions are: Help lead the design and implementation of data processing workflows. Develop and maintain data models and JSON Schemas to ensure data integrity and consistency. Collaborate with cross-functional teams such as analysts and other software engineers to identify data needs and develop solutions to meet those requirements. Manage and optimize data storage and retrieval using Elasticsearch and Hypermode's Dgraph graph database, with some MongoDB and Redis used as well. Manage end-to-end dataflow using tools such as Apache Nifi. Provide mentorship and guidance to team members in best practices for data processing and software engineering. Leverage AI platforms to assist in hybrid automated/manual data transformation, code development, and schema management. Collaborate with analysts, product owners, and fellow engineers to ensure solutions meet operational needs. Help identify and implement process improvements to support faster delivery of new data sources and overall team efficiency. Requirements: Significant data wrangling and dataflow experience (i.e., incorporating aspects of data discovery, mining, analysis, cleaning, exploration, modeling, structuring, enriching, and validating). Proficient in JSON and JSON Schemas or a similar schema framework. Strong background in data modeling concepts and techniques. Experience with NoSQL databases (e.g., Elasticsearch, MongoDB, Redis, graph databases, etc.). Proficiency in dataflow tools such as Apache Nifi. Extensive software engineering experience in either Python or Java, with a preference for candidates with a strong knowledge of both languages. Familiarity with using generative AI to assist with code generation and data transformation. Strong familiarity with Git for version control and Maven for build automation. Comfortable working in a Linux development environment. Experience using Atlassian tools, including Jira and Confluence, for task tracking and documentation. Demonstrated willingness and ability to learn new tools, technologies, and workflows. Excellent communication and teamwork skills. Bachelor's degree in a technical discipline and twelve (12) years' experience OR Four (4) additional year's of relevant experience in lieu of a Bachelor's degree Preferred Skills and Experience: Experience with various corporate data formats.
