Description:
Surgical Technologists are educated professionals with a college degree and/or certificate from an accredited Surgical Technology program.
These professionals follow the cognitive model of a positive care approach.
They are actively involved in continuing education to develop the best surgical practices.
Surgical Technologists may be Certified or Registered with the state.
They receive recognition through involvement in clinical ladder programs.
The role follows the mission of serving the community with the greatest care and love.
Surgical Technologists demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to scrub for cases appropriate to the age of patients served intra-operatively.
This includes knowledge of anatomy and physiology.
They scrub for procedures according to established aseptic technique guidelines.
Procedures include pediatrics, thoracic, transplant, organ procurement, vascular, interventional radiology, orthopedics, gynecology, robotic surgery, EENT, plastics, dental, urology, oncology, laser, and trauma.
Surgical Technologists possess analytical skills to organize and prepare the operating room prior to surgery.
They collect all necessary supplies, instruments, and hardware.
They maintain a sterile environment, set up back tables and mayo stands, and count necessary items according to procedure.
Intra-operatively, they assist surgeons with routine and complex surgical procedures.
This includes scrubbing, draping, passing instruments, sponges, sutures, and other supplies.
They hold retractors, first assist, and assist in clean-up after a case.
They sterilize instruments in preparation for a case or contaminated instruments.
Surgical Technologists anticipate and respond to surgeons' needs during surgery.
They receive surgical specimens, preserve specimens accordingly, and notify the circulating nurse of the specimen type and source.
This role requires a professional level of knowledge of modern surgical principles, techniques, and procedures.
These skills are generally acquired through the completion of an accredited surgical technology program.
Surgical Technologists require a minimum of four months of intra-operative orientation and on-the-job training.
This training helps them learn department policies, procedures, and work routines, and develop proficiency in the use of surgical equipment.
They gain an understanding of various surgical procedures, including traumas.
Interpersonal skills are necessary to communicate effectively and concisely with surgeons, anesthesiologists, nurses, and other patient care providers.
They function as clinical resource persons to various personnel and assist in identifying and resolving clinical and operational problems.
Surgical Technologists also orient new staff as needed.
