Description: The Surgical Technologist Certified functions under the direction of the registered professional nurse. He/she assists the healthcare team in providing safe, age-appropriate, and culturally aware patient care. This role has the knowledge, skill, and ability to perform duties within the context of moderate to high acuity surgical cases. There is an expectation to work above this level as cases require. The position involves anticipating the needs of the surgeon and other members of the healthcare team. It requires the acquisition of additional surgical skills for progressively more difficult cases. The Surgical Technologist Certified demonstrates an efficient, organized surgical plan for assigned cases. He/she takes initiative to discuss the surgical plan with other members of the healthcare team. The ability to troubleshoot instruments and equipment is necessary. The Surgical Technologist anticipates any additional supplies or equipment required for procedures. The role includes mentoring, precepting, or training in various modalities. Participation in performance improvement initiatives is expected. Duties include: Preparation of the operative suite and surgical field to ensure a safe patient care environment. This includes maintaining the sterile field and addressing other patient safety concerns. The Surgical Technologist gathers required instruments and supplies. He/she serves as a surgical assistant as needed, but not as a certified surgical first assistant. Other duties may include assisting with inventory, ordering, and stocking. Ensuring compliance with standards at all times is important. Call or late coverage may be required. Core Responsibilities include: Checking supplies and equipment needed for surgical procedures. Assisting with room set-up, including the opening of sterile supplies. Setting up the sterile table with instruments, supplies, and equipment needed for the procedure in a timely manner. Performing surgical counts with the circulator. Actively participating in the procedure pause/time-out. Scrubbing, gowning, and gloving; gowning and gloving the surgeon and assistants. Assisting in draping the sterile field. Passing instruments to the surgeon during the procedure. Maintaining an organized back table and operative field. Preparing sterile dressings. Participating in the post-procedure pause and proper handling of specimens. Cleaning and preparing instruments for terminal sterilization. Applying principles of asepsis to prevent infection and ensure patient safety. Preparing case carts according to procedures and preference cards. Observing patients' conditions and reporting any changes to the physician and registered nurse. Proactively planning for the next steps in the procedure as needed. Preparing rooms and areas for receiving patients. Maintaining financial stewardship related to supplies and equipment. The Surgical Technologist also provides relationship-based patient-centered care that is consistent with patient characteristics. Ensuring compliance with all organizational policies, standards of work, and conduct is essential. Demonstrating teamwork and collaboration is important for promoting a positive work environment. The role includes serving as a patient advocate. Participating in performance improvement initiatives and seeking opportunities to improve processes is encouraged.
