Medical Laboratory Technician I Job Overview
A Medical Laboratory Technician I is a skilled professional responsible for performing various duties in the laboratory, including specimen collection, processing, and testing.
- Key Responsibilities:
- Clinical Testing: Performs clinical testing in assigned sections, such as general laboratory, Blood Bank, and Microbiology.
- Specimen Collection/Handling/Processing: Obtains blood specimens via venipuncture and/or fingerstick, accurately identifies and labels specimens, and follows procedures for processing and testing.
- Result Reporting: Recognizes errors or improbable results, reports critical values, and performs tests within established timeframes.
- Quality Control: Performs and records quality control according to Policy & Procedure, following CLIA, CAP, AABB, and JCAHO guidelines.
- Preventative Maintenance: Performs daily and periodic preventative maintenance with documentation, troubleshoots minor problems, and initiates service calls as needed.
- Professional Growth: Takes responsibility for seeking and achieving professional growth and continued education.
- Education: An associate's degree or higher in clinical laboratory science or medical laboratory technology from an accredited institution or equivalent laboratory training and experience.
- Experience: Six months of approved clinical laboratory experience, which must include a clinical rotation through the following sections of the laboratory: Blood Banking, Microbiology, Chemistry, Hematology, Immunology, and Urinalysis/Body Fluids.
- Licenses/Certifications: State licensure and board certification are required within one year of hire.
