The Head of Lung/GI/GU
will sit on the Translational Medicine Oncology Leadership team, reporting directly to the Head of Translational Medicine, Oncology. This role provides scientific and strategic leadership and operational oversight for all biomarker work and translational research in lung cancer, GI cancers, and GU cancers across the gRED early stage portfolio and the Roche late stage oncology portfolio. They will oversee a department of approximately 20 people, with control over 3-5 leaders of people leaders, responsible for advancing research discoveries into novel cancer therapies, discovering and developing novel biomarkers and strategies to support clinical trials, and deriving new research directions and drug discovery insights from patient samples and data. This role requires an individual with a cross-enterprise (borderless) mindset, outstanding communication and leadership skills to enable collaboration across Roche and external partners. The individual will work closely with leaders across Research, Early Clinical Development, Computational Sciences, Development Sciences in gRED, and Product Development, Medical Affairs, and Global Product Strategy (GPS), as well as global functions, to contribute to strategies for impactful therapies that offer transformative benefits for patients. The candidate must be a scientific expert and strategic thinker, capable of bridging cutting-edge translational medicine environments with a fast-paced clinical organization. They will be a key influencer in governance committees such as the Research Review Committee (RRC), Development Review Committee (DRC), late-stage therapeutic area committees, and Translational Medicine Review Forum (TMRF). The Opportunity Accountable for the scientific impact and achievements in Lung, GI, GU diseases from Early Development through approval and lifecycle planning across a global organization, demonstrating strategic excellence. Expand translational research strategies in prioritized diseases using innovative approaches to identify new mechanisms of response and resistance, combination therapies, biomarkers, patient segments, and new targets. Collaborate with global heads of Research and Clinical Oncology to ensure programs are scientifically sound, progress the pipeline, and align with diagnostic and biomarker strategies. Establish and maintain external partnerships with key opinion leaders, academic institutions, and other external entities, and be recognized as a scientific thought leader in oncology translational research. Assess and implement organizational adjustments within Translational Medicine Oncology to enhance value creation and generation. Act as a thought leader within the leadership team, staying informed of innovative approaches and external competition to influence strategies and guide initiatives. Manage resource allocation for Biomarker sub-Teams to optimize project prioritization, balancing capacity and project needs. Develop internal talent through opportunities in scientific, functional, and technical leadership, project responsibilities, and people management. Create an inclusive, inspiring scientific environment that attracts and retains top talent. Prioritize resources to ensure initiatives are delivered within budget and timelines. Who you are Ph.D., M.D., or M.D./Ph.D. in Biology, Molecular Biology, or related fields with significant experience in drug development. Over 10 years of progressive leadership in Oncology biomarker and diagnostic efforts, with a strong background in cancer biology, genetics, and immunology. Deep understanding of drug and biomarker development processes and regulatory requirements from discovery through post-marketing. Proven leadership in building and motivating effective teams and fostering productive collaborations. Exceptional communication, influencing, and partnership skills in a matrix environment. Evidence of innovation through patents, publications, and products. Relocation benefits are available. The expected salary range in California is $241,500-$448,500, with actual pay based on experience and other factors. A discretionary bonus may be available.
