Primary Responsibilities:
Promotes the mission, vision, and values of the facility or health care organization. Uses epidemiology and surveillance principles to identify appropriate communicable disease prevention methods within the perioperative environment of the facility or health care organization. Identifies and implements IPC processes related to surveillance, data analysis, and reporting to eliminate potential infection hazards for employees, physicians, other health care providers, patients, and visitors. Informs and updates all necessary persons about IPC policies that affect perioperative services. Assists in the appropriate selection and usage of products and equipment related to cleaning, antiseptics, disinfection and sterilization, and facility or health care organization physical design and construction. Contributes to IPC programs and services and integrates them with perioperative services and organizational business and clinical goals and objectives with consideration of the populations served and the services provided. Reviews and updates the perioperative infection prevention program plan annually or sooner as needed. Verifies that perioperative IPC practices are based on evidence-based literature and guidelines, organizational policies and procedures, regulatory guidelines and accreditation standards, and state and federal statutes. Provides ongoing orientation and education pertinent to IPC based on a needs assessment of the perioperative environment. Implements improvement processes to achieve desired outcomes relative to IPC within the perioperative environment. Tracks and analyzes perioperative IPC issues identified through monthly surveillance. Analyzes surveillance data, including calculation of risk-adjusted rates appropriate to the indicator(s) when sufficient data are available. Provides timely and credible monthly reporting of perioperative surveillance results to the Quality Improvement Committee and Medical Advisory Committee/governing body of the facility or health care organization. Maintains technology-based access to current information on IPC and epidemiology. Identifies opportunities for improvement of perioperative IPC practices based on indicators, process or outcome measures, and other findings and observations. Assists with public health epidemiologic investigations as requested to contribute to quality health in the community. Recommends new or revised perioperative practices, policies, and/or procedures based on current literature and evidence-based IPC strategies, regulatory and accreditation standards and guidelines of applicable professional organizations and governmental agencies. Describes microbiology, laboratory procedures, aseptic technique, wound classification, and epidemiological techniques relative to perioperative IPC. Provides education for perioperative personnel regarding facility or health care organization policies and procedures applicable to IPC within the perioperative environment. Reviews and updates policies and procedures and validates compliance. Responds to noncompliance with policies and procedures in a fair and consistent manner, and settles disputes equitably. Identifies practice protocols that minimize cost without jeopardizing patient care. Functions as a liaison, instructor, communicator, and internal consultant regarding perioperative IPC practices. Pursues professional growth and participates in a professional organization. Acts as a patient advocate and maintains privacy and confidentiality of all appropriate information. Required:
Bachelor's Degree in Nursing Graduate from an Accredited Nursing School Current Registered Nurse Licensure in State of Employment Basic Life Support (BLS) certification Completion of a surveillance course within six months of hire/assumption of the role, with regular refresher training thereafter Knowledge of microbiology, laboratory procedures, aseptic technique, and epidemiological techniques Ability to function as a liaison, instructor, communicator, and internal consultant Knowledge of regulatory and accreditation standards Adept with applicable qualitative, quantitative, or technical tools Basic computer skills (eg, Microsoft Word®) Preferred:
Certified in Infection Control (CIC) certification and/or Certified Ambulatory Infection Preventionist (CAIP) Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) certification Advanced computer skills (eg, Microsoft PowerPoint®, Excel®) Working Conditions/Physical Requirements:
