A respected law firm located in
New Haven, CT , is seeking an experienced Patent Agent to join its expanding intellectual property team. This role offers the opportunity to work at the intersection of law, science, and technology, providing strategic support on a variety of patent-related matters. The focus will be primarily on the life sciences sector, engaging with innovations that span biotechnology, pharmaceuticals, and medical devices. Duties
Assess technical disclosures and determine the patentability of new inventions Draft, prepare, and file U.S. patent applications in coordination with attorneys Manage prosecution of U.S. patent applications and liaise with foreign counsel on international filings Assist in IP due diligence and contribute to strategic management of patent portfolios Perform in-depth legal and technical research related to IP protection and enforcement Collaborate with legal teams, inventors, and clients to shape intellectual property strategies Facilitate communication and workflow between legal departments and outside counsel Requirements
At least 4 years of patent prosecution experience, either within a law firm or corporate legal department Proven expertise in life sciences-focused technologies, including biotechnology or medical devices Strong understanding of scientific principles relevant to patent law Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to communicate complex ideas clearly Education
Ph.D. in a life sciences discipline such as molecular biology, biochemistry, or a related field Certifications
Admitted to practice before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (or eligible to sit for the Patent Bar shortly) Skills
Ability to analyze technical documents and scientific disclosures Experience preparing high-quality patent applications Familiarity with patent laws, procedures, and strategy Strong writing and analytical skills Comfortable working across interdisciplinary teams Additional experience with mechanical or electrical technologies is a plus
