Job Summary :
We’re seeking a strategic, hands-on finance leader to help shape the future of our organization. This role combines big-picture thinking with day-to-day execution, such as building multi-year financial models and guiding capital planning, to managing core accounting functions and presenting insights to the Board. This role is ideal for an analytical finance professional who thrives in a fast-growing, entrepreneurial nonprofit environment and is excited to help build the financial foundation of a once-in-a-generation initiative.
Duties/Responsibilities:
Strategic Leadership & Planning
- Collaborate with the CEO, Board Finance Committee, and Development team to provide strategic, data-driven insights that shape organizational and campaign decisions.
- Build and refine multi-year financial models to support long-term planning, capital initiatives, organizational growth, and program expansion.
- Lead the annual budgeting process, ensuring alignment with operations, strategic goals, capital projects, and fundraising objectives.
- Manage cash flow projections and provide recommendations on allocations and investment strategies to the Finance Committee.
- Participate in ongoing strategic planning and risk assessment, identifying cost efficiencies, sustainability measures, and opportunities for diversifying revenue streams.
Financial Operations & Accounting
- Manage day-to-day accounting functions, including accounts payable/receivable, payroll, benefits administration, grant accounting, reimbursements, and reconciliations.
- Ensure timely and accurate processing of invoices, reimbursements, and payroll in compliance with contracts, vendor agreements, and Center policies.
- Administer accounting and budgeting requirements for capital budgets and programs, including funding strategies.
- Establish and refine financial systems, tools, and processes to support a scaling organization (ERP/accounting software, donor database integration, etc.).
- Plan for and build a finance team over time, ensuring proper delegation and growth of internal capacity.
Reporting & Compliance
- Prepare accurate and timely monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements; interpret results and make recommendations for improvement.
- Provide timely reporting to leadership, funders, the Board, and regulatory agencies.
- Lead the annual audit process and prepare supporting documentation.
- Ensure timely preparation and filing of annual tax returns (including IRS Form 990) and state charitable registrations.
- Maintain compliance with nonprofit generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP), state and federal regulations, and funder requirements.
- Implement and monitor strong internal controls and best practices to safeguard resources.
- Monitor and report financial performance by comparing actual results to budgeted projections, ensuring accuracy and insight for decision-making
Development & Campaign Support
- Partner with and support Development to track restricted/unrestricted funds, grants, pledges, and donor contributions.
- Produce financial information and reports for grants, ensuring compliance with funder requirements and cost accounting standards.
- Design and maintain campaign financial reporting systems to ensure transparency and accountability.
- Lead forecasting and planning for multi-year capital projects tied to campaign initiatives.
- Manage relationships with auditors, bankers, consultants, and vendors, negotiating favorable agreements and ensuring compliance with fiscal policies.
- Secure all required documentation (e.g., W-9, 1099, COI) to maintain compliance and smooth financial operations.
- Support relationships with banking officials, audit firms, and external consultants.
Education and Experience:
Qualified candidates will have the following education and professional experience:
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field (CPA or MBA preferred).
- 7+ years of progressive financial management experience, ideally in a nonprofit or mission-driven organization.
- Experience supporting and coordinating budget development and analysis.
- Experience with large-scale fundraising campaigns and managing restricted funds.
- Strong knowledge of nonprofit GAAP and compliance requirements.
- Proven track record in budgeting, forecasting, and multi-year financial modeling.
- Advanced proficiency in spreadsheets, analytics, and financial/enterprise-wide resource planning (ERP) systems.
- Experience in capital building projects is a bonus.
