Role Overview

We are seeking a seasoned and strategic Chief Accounting Officer (“CAO”) to join our executive team and lead our accounting and financial reporting functions. The CAO reports to the Chief Financial Officer (“CFO”) and will be responsible for overseeing accounting operations, ensuring compliance with GAAP and regulatory standards, and providing accurate and timely financial information to the SEC and management. The successful candidate will play a key role in driving the financial strategy of the company and ensuring the integrity of our financial reporting processes. This position is based in Lone Tree, Colorado, and is an in-the-office position.

Role Responsibilities

  1. Develop and implement accounting policies and procedures to ensure compliance with GAAP and other regulatory standards.
  2. Oversee the preparation and analysis of financial statements, including income statements, balance sheets, and cash flow statements.
  3. Manage the month-end, quarter-end, and year-end close processes, ensuring accuracy and timeliness of financial reporting.
  4. Preparation of quarterly/annual consolidation workbook and SEC reporting.
  5. Assist management with press releases, investor calls, board meeting preparation, and other communication as needed.
  6. Work with external tax advisors on tax provisions and returns, reviewing and approving their output.
  7. Collaborate with internal and external auditors to support the annual audit process and address audit findings or recommendations.
  8. Evaluate and implement accounting systems and tools to streamline processes and improve efficiency.
  9. Provide strategic financial analysis and insights to support decision-making by the executive team and board of directors.
  10. Stay current on accounting standards and regulatory requirements, ensuring compliance and driving continuous improvement within the finance function.

Minimum qualifications include a Bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance, or a related field; active CPA certification; and at least 10 years of progressive experience in accounting leadership roles. Experience with public company financial reporting, working with auditors, and coordinating audits for smaller reporting companies is required. Experience in Power and/or Coal accounting is preferred, along with Big 4 or regional accounting firm experience. Candidates should demonstrate strong analytical, communication, and leadership skills, with knowledge of federal, state, and local taxes, and the ability to adapt in a fast-paced environment.
