The Investment Operations Manager reports to the CIO and collaborates closely with the investment team. This role focuses on operational data management, investment performance reporting, risk measurement and analysis, and systems development tasks that enable and support investment operations.

Specific Responsibilities Include:

  • Investment accounting: Verify all accounting data before entry in our portfolio management system and reconcile data monthly to our administrator.
  • Research management system: Manage and ensure the accuracy and completeness of all data in the research management system. Own the integration between the research management system and portfolio management system.
  • External service providers and technology: Oversee and maintain third party provider relationships including technology vendors. Stay current on new providers in the market, proactively recommend changes that need to be considered, and lead the implementation of any changes to providers, processes, or services.
  • Reporting: Generate investment committee reporting and internal reporting accurately and efficiently. Update report format or content as requested.
  • Operational due diligence: Work with a third consultant to schedule and participate in operational due diligence meetings with both existing and prospective managers as needed.
  • Fee study: Lead the annual fee study by collecting the management and incentive fees charged by each fund within the portfolio and presenting the findings.
  • Audit: Serve as the point person within the investment office for any annual audit-related requests.
  • Procedures: Maintain the investment office procedure manual, proactively recommending process improvements to enhance portfolio management, data accuracy, and work efficiency.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

Education: Bachelors degree in economics, accounting, or statistics preferred but would consider an equivalent combination of education and/or experience.

Work Experience: At least ten years of relevant work experience and increasing responsibilities in investment management, performance reporting, accounting, and/or treasury operations for endowments, foundations, custodians, administrators and/or investment management firms.

Travel: This position may require occasional business travel.

  • Possesses an intense intellectual curiosity and eagerness to pitch in on a wide range of assignments.
  • Has knowledge of private and public investments (such as limited partnerships, hedge funds, private equity, stocks, bonds, derivatives, etc.) and financial reporting.
  • Learns quickly, can synthesize multiple sources of information, gains insights, and communicates clearly and coherently.
  • Takes pride in attention to detail.
  • Possesses problem-solving and analytical skills with a focus on improving processes combined with solid judgment and decision-making abilities.
  • Prioritizes and multi-tasks effectively using excellent organizational skills with keen attention to detail.
  • Has excellent communication skills, including well-developed interpersonal, written, and listening skills including excellent technical writing skills.
  • Is interested in pursuing professional designation, e.g., CIPM, CFA, CPA, FRM, or CAIA. Actual designation preferred.
  • Possesses a passion for doing what is right, with unquestioned integrity, positive ethics, and values reflective of the Kauffman Foundation.

  • Has computer literacy skills, including proficiency with Microsoft tools, Box, and Slack with demonstrated advanced Excel skills, including statistical analysis and PivotTables. Experience with portfolio analytics software, e.g., Caissa, Dynamo, Burgiss, preferred.
