Chief Financial Officer VPM

As a non-profit public media organization, VPM has a proud history dating back to 1964 and a strong commitment to serving the Commonwealth of Virginia. In 2019, VPM rebranded to better reflect its mission, which spans television, radio, and digital platforms.

VPM operates public television stations VPM PBS, VPM Plus, VPM PBS KIDS, lifestyle channel VPM Create, and international program channel VPM WORLD, as well as Richmond public radio stations VPM News (88.9 FM) and VPM Music (107.3 FM, 93.1 FM, and 88.9-HD2). In the Northern Neck (89.1 FM) and Southside Virginia (90.1 FM), listeners receive a combination of news and music.

Role Overview: The Chief Financial Officer (CFO) is responsible for overseeing the financial and risk management operations of VPM. This includes developing financial and operational strategies, establishing metrics aligned with those strategies, and maintaining control systems to safeguard assets and ensure accurate financial reporting.

The CFO will report directly to the President and must possess exceptional communication and presentation skills to convey complex financial information to non-financial stakeholders and translate data into actionable insights.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Assist in formulating the organizations future direction and supporting tactical initiatives.
  • Manage capital expenditures and budgeting processes.
  • Develop performance measures supporting the strategic goals of VPM.
  • Ensure compliance with financial, regulatory, and legal requirements, including FCC reporting.
  • Act as the primary contact for investment-related matters.
  • Liaise with the VPM Board and Virginia Foundation for Public Media Board of Directors.
  • Monitor cash flow and manage the investment portfolio.
  • Take primary responsibility for annual audits.
  • Participate in pledge drives and other corporate activities.

Location:

  • Richmond, Virginia, with some regional travel required.
  • Hybrid work environment: 4 days per week in the office.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelors degree in Accounting or Business.
  • Minimum of 10 years of business management experience.
  • Strong understanding of financial analysis, budgeting, forecasting, and financial management.
  • Significant experience in the non-profit sector, with financial leadership responsibility for P&L of $25 million or more.
  • Proven ability to interact effectively with executive management and Boards of Directors.
  • Demonstrated understanding of investments.
  • In-depth knowledge of 501(c)(3) regulations and FCC rules.
  • Experience with multi-entity organizations and diverse revenue streams.
  • Knowledge of public media regulatory requirements.
  • Preferred: Experience in a public media organization, member station, station group, or related board/partnership activities.
