School District Treasurer
With a population of just over 300 students, Menands Union Free School District is a unique
PreK-8 school and district. We are a very supportive school community, and work
collaboratively to meet the diverse needs of our students in a nurturing environment.
Overview of position: This technical role is responsible for overseeing the fiscal operations of
the district, including accounting, financial reporting, and regulatory compliance. The District
Treasurer plays a critical role in maintaining accurate financial records and ensuring adherence
to state and local guidelines.
Qualifications: The ideal candidate will hold a bachelors degree in business or accounting or
have equivalent experience in a school district or municipal setting. Strong organizational,
analytical, and financial management skills are essential.
Duties and Responsibilities: This is a highly important accounting position. Some examples of
position responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
- Ensure double-entry accounting records for all School District Funds and accounts,
including subsidiary ledgers; - Periodically determines cash balance of School District funds;
- Assists in classifying expenditures in accordance with established codes;
- Maintaining subsidiary records;
- Review trial balances and a variety of financial reports and statements as requested;
- Maintains control accounts in a general ledger;
- Responsible for payroll preparation of all funds;
- Assists in financial planning, including budget control and budget compilation;
- Revises, systematizes, and installs account-keeping methods and procedures;
- Review ledgers of revenue received with bank statements;
- Creates and prepares spreadsheets as assigned;
Required Knowledge and Abilities:
- Thorough knowledge of modern principles and practices of accounting, primarily fund
accounting; - Thorough ability to prepare and maintain accounting records and reports;
- Initiative and resourcefulness in the solution of complex accounting problems;
- Ability to analyze financial accounting records and to draw logical conclusions therefrom;
- Thorough knowledge of business English, ability to plan, assign, and supervise the
work of account keeping and clerical staff; - Ability to understand and carry out complex oral and written directions;
- Ability to make arithmetic computations rapidly and accurately;
- Ability to prepare correspondence and reports;
- Ability to secure the cooperation of others;
- Ability to deal effectively with the pub and give detailed oral presentations;
- Ability to readily acquire familiarity with departmental organization;
- Ability to create spreadsheets and documents utilizing various computer programs;
- Good judgment in solving complex accounting problems;
- A high degree of accuracy, initiative, and resourcefulness;
- Tact and courtesy;
